We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Carr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, is there something you believe many others might not?

I teach bruce’s art and philosophy of jeet kune do. I teach what Bruce taught to my teacher because it works. But it’s also a guideline on how to evolve within the context and principles of jkd. Bruce was a genius and what he did works. He also left the door open for self expression and evolution which is something you don’t find in most classical arts where you’ve got a set system that is taught and replicated and doesn’t change much if, at all for hundreds of years. Combat evolves just look at boxing. You can see from boxing that over the years, the fighters stance and hand position and the way they train and nutrition has changed. Just as Bruce Lee said absorb what is useful and reject what is useless and to add what is uniquely your own. I consider myself a researcher. Bruce lee and my teacher jerry spoke a lot about the “truth.” And as far as combat goes, the truth is what actually works in a fight. That can vary from person to person. Depending on which part of town the person lives or their relative size to potential opponents to their past and their experience in the world. All of these things influence how a person learns and what they’re likely to encounter and how they should prepare for it. One of the things that makes me different is I don’t offer a canned process. I work to lead everyone into being the best that they can be
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA has some really interesting history. At first thought I’d probably take them places that I think they would enjoy. But if it were up to me… We would hike, eat good food, and visit interesting places. I’d take them to chinatown to bruce’s studio, after dim sum at the golden dragon. This is a spot that bruce and jerry used to eat together. I had been going there for years before I knew this fact – it’s a fun spot. I would probably take them to the house that Bruce lived in Culver City, where jerry spent twice a week working out with Bruce. I don’t drink, but we’d probably hit some of charles bukowski’s haunts downtown as well as coles sandwich shop. For dinner at some point, we would probably head over to Pacé to eat outdoors in front of jim morrisons house. And if it were some time in the fall or winter, we would definitely be doing a lot of hiking with my dogs – heat kills dogs, so do rattlesnakes. I do hike solo in the summer, so that’s a possibility. Though I feel guilty every time I hike without my pack.. We would definitely catch live music at the fonda or the wiltern, or the palladium or somewhere awesome, maybe to see my friend Santi gold – Who happens to have a show that will probably have just past by the time this is released. Seriously, go check her out, she’s awesome live. They’d be up with me at 4am to do qi gong and workout. A lot of my friends growing up have become club promoters and dj’s, so we’d probably stop by Das Bunker for some very loud music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jerry Poteet and the bruce lee foundation
