We had the good fortune of connecting with Amari Jade and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amari, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been a creative person. I grew up pursuing performing arts as a dancer. I started drawing in high school, then expanded into painting in college. I want to continue growing my artistry across various mediums throughout my journey. I can’t picture my life without being creative in some capacity.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
This is such an interesting time to be interviewed because my work is undergoing a major change from what I started out doing! Initially, I was drawing these surrealist, minimal line illustrations and patterns. Now, I’m painting furniture, using moss and nature as a medium, and getting into sculpture installations. Even though the materials I work with are changing, I will always showcase my ethereal style throughout the various mediums I’m using.
Getting to where I am professionally has mostly been a mental game. The biggest challenge was staying focused on what I wanted for myself and not letting the pressure or opinions of others intercept what was best for me. I overcame that challenge through failure. Sometimes, you have to learn the hard way that you’re off track in order to get back on track.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of the best things about LA is the beautiful landscape! I would take them to my favorite view spots like Everett Park in Echo Park and Barnsdall Park in Hollywood. For a refreshing nature fix, I’d go to Descanso Gardens in La Canada, and Zuma Beach in Malibu.
For food, I’d suggest Howlin Rays and Annie’s Soul Delicious, and for small plates and drinks, I’d recommend 1010 Wine Bar in Inglewood.
As for the great art scene that LA has to offer, some of my favorite places are Superchief Gallery LA, La Luz De Jesus Gallery, Mickalene Thomas’ All About Love exhibition at The Broad, and just catching a lot of the great murals and street art around town.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to Hive Gallery, Superchief Gallery LA, and Sovern LA! The people I’ve met here have had such a significant impact on my artistry and career. They saw something in me and my art throughout those moments when I thought I wasn’t ready or good enough. Thank you so much for your reassurance and support. It means the world to me!
