We had the good fortune of connecting with Kosar Abbasi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kosar, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Iran, a land rich in history and culture but bound by restrictive societal norms. From a young age, I felt the rhythm of dance in my soul, but in a country where dancing is illegal, I knew my passion could not flourish. At 19, I made the bold decision to leave Iran and pursue my dream of being on stage. This journey took me through India and eventually five different countries, each experience shaping me into the person I am today.

My upbringing taught me to stand firmly for my rights and to seek freedom, no matter the risks involved. Facing fears head-on and navigating through challenges have molded me into an independent artist and an entrepreneur. Every step of my journey has reinforced my sense of self-worth and value. I am a testament to the power of resilience and determination, showing that with courage and conviction, we can break barriers and create our own paths to fulfillment.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a reflection of my journey and a celebration of resilience and passion. What sets me apart from others is my unwavering commitment to my dream, despite the challenges and obstacles I faced. I’m proud of standing up for my right to be a dancer, even when it was illegal in Iran and not accepted by society, culture, or even my own family. Leaving Iran at a young age, without knowing English and without any support, was a daunting challenge. I had to navigate the complexities of making a living, studying, pursuing my passion, and surviving on my own. It was far from easy, but I never let fear hold me back. I kept moving forward, determined to achieve my dreams.

The journey was filled with challenges, from cultural barriers to financial struggles. Yet, I learned that when you follow your dreams and live with love and passion, success will naturally follow. It’s a lesson that has shaped me profoundly: when you are true to yourself and your passions, the world eventually takes notice and even those who once opposed you may come to admire and support you.

As I turn 40, I reflect on a journey dedicated entirely to the art of dance, the purest form of self-expression and freedom. Growing up in Iran, where dance was forbidden, only fueled my passion and purpose to pursue my dream against all odds. Standing up for my right to dance, despite societal and cultural restrictions, was a bold and challenging decision. Leaving Iran at a young age, without knowing English and with no support, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and resilience.

What began as a dream to perform just once on stage has, over the past 20 years, blossomed into a life filled with countless performances across different countries. Each step of this journey has been a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of dreams. Navigating through cultural barriers, financial struggles, and personal challenges, I learned that living with love and passion brings achievements and a life full of fulfillment.

Today, I am proud to announce the launch of our very own Dancer Society App bridging the gap between dancers, companies, events, and paid opportunities , a space where we can continue to create, inspire, and celebrate the beauty of dance together. This company represents not just a professional milestone but a culmination of my journey—one filled with determination, artistry, and the unyielding pursuit of freedom.

I want the world to know that I am living my dream and will continue to do so fearlessly. My story and my art are about breaking free from constraints, embracing authenticity, and inspiring others to live life true to themselves. As I look forward to the future, I am excited to continue dreaming and creating, unbound by fear or limitations.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, the journey to where I am today is not one I undertook alone. My parents and sister deserve immense credit and recognition. They were my superheroes, allowing me to choose a path that was different from what they believed in. They taught me to face my fears, find solutions independently, and be ready to face the world on my own. Their unwavering support and encouragement were the foundation upon which I built my dreams.

Moving to India was a transformative experience. The magical land itself, with its rich culture of dance and art, had a profound impact on me. Meeting Osho was a turning point; their influence helped me free myself from self-imposed limitations and experience life fearlessly.

Along my journey, I have encountered countless amazing individuals, each contributing to my growth and success. While it’s impossible to name them all, their impact is deeply cherished and remembered.

I would also love to give credit to my lovely Art Master, Freydoun Rassouli, for his inspiration in my artistic and creative work. His guidance has been instrumental in shaping my artistic journey. Additionally, his amazing wife, Gitty Rassouli, who I call Soul Mother, has been a source of immense support and love.

Two books that have been particularly influential in my life are The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. These books have provided wisdom and guidance, helping me stay grounded and focused on my path.

To all these people, places, and works of literature, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Your support and inspiration have been invaluable in my journey, and I am eternally grateful.
