We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth & Rosa Ruvalcaba and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth & Rosa, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
During our early years in business, we found ourselves questioning whether we should keep going or give up quite a bit. We believed strongly in our ability to create videos to help our clients share their stories, but we were a new businesses and had to work on building our network and getting our name out there. When we hit rough patches such as cash-flow issues, the question of “should we keep going?” came up more often than not. We thankfully searched for and found a community that has supported and pushed us. We have two business advisors that we check in with often, and they have helped us keep accountable to ourselves. With their assistance, we identified and faced our biggest fears and challenges and put together a game plan to address them. Forecasting and seeking a line of credit to help assist us when clients were late with payments helped alleviate a lot of stress. Owning your own business is not always easy, but what kept and keeps us going is a love and passion for telling stories. We meet a lot internally to reflect on our company. We have tough conversations at times, but we have always told ourselves that we’ll keep going as long as we continue to wake up excited to go to work. We recently celebrated our 13th year in business and it’s been an amazing journey. We’ve made it this far because we’ve kept pushing, constantly evolving as a company and constantly in love with the work that we do.
What should our readers know about your business?
ALAS Media is a Los Angeles based, certified woman and minority-owned video production company that we founded in 2007. We help businesses and organizations find, cultivate and share their stories through video. From business profiles, to fundraising videos for nonprofits and school profiles, to corporate videos, we really enjoy helping people showcase who they are. We’re most proud of the passion that we capture when filming and the relationships we build with our clients. Most of our work is documentary based and usually involves non-actors. We interview everyday people–owners of small businesses, school teachers, business executives and being on camera can be difficult. We work hard to establish a connection with the people we are filming, gain their trust, and bring out the amazing stories that they want to share. We don’t like to script our videos–we enjoy hearing the genuine response of a nonprofit that is helping the community it’s in or the startup that’s excited to share their product with the world. We feel this really sets us apart from most production companies. We’re storytellers who use video to communicate and we recognize the importance and impact of genuine human connection. It’s that authenticity that helps the organizations that we’re working with raise money to help them continue to serve our communities, helps that passionate startup raise the needed funds to launch their product, helps schools showcase their successes and also helps highlight how a corporation is having an impact.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our business advisors, Pat Kyle and Russ Chapman have been our guiding light since we began our journey. They help hold us accountable and are always there to push and encourage, and discourage (when needed). They keep us grounded but also push us to dream big. Their mentorship is invaluable to our business.
