We had the good fortune of connecting with khush Patel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi khush, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk-taking has been an integral part of my journey, particularly in my career as a photographer. My decision to pursue photography wasn’t just a leap into the unknown; it was a calculated risk driven by passion, a desire for creative fulfillment, and the belief that my work could resonate with others.

When I first started out in the industry, the initial two years were a period of intense learning and growth but came with no financial reward. I worked tirelessly, honing my skills and building a portfolio, often taking on projects for free just for the exposure. It was a struggle, and there were numerous moments of doubt. Friends and family questioned the viability of my career choice, urging me to consider more stable and conventional paths.

The first time I got paid for my work, four years ago, was a turning point. It wasn’t just about the money; it was validation that my skills and vision had value. However, the road ahead was still fraught with challenges. The photography industry is as much about experience and fun as it is about finding ways to make a sustainable income. This duality made it difficult to balance my creative aspirations with the practical needs of living and supporting a family.

To navigate this, I had to diversify my approach. While I continued to pursue passion projects that fed my artistic soul, I also took on more commercial work. Weddings, corporate events, product photography—these gigs were not always as creatively fulfilling, but they were necessary to build a steady income stream. I invested time in marketing myself, learning the business side of photography, and building a network of clients and collaborators.

Balancing passion with practicality required continuous learning and adaptation. I had to be strategic about the risks I took, ensuring that each move was a step towards building a sustainable career. There were times when I had to turn down projects that didn’t align with my vision or didn’t offer fair compensation, which was difficult but necessary for long-term growth.

Over the six years, the experience has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to one’s passion while being pragmatic. The risks I took in pursuing photography have not only shaped my career but also my approach to life. They have taught me that while passion is the driving force, success often requires a blend of creativity, business acumen, and the courage to keep pushing forward despite the uncertainties.

In essence, taking risks has been about finding a balance between following my dreams and making strategic decisions to build a stable and fulfilling career. It’s been a challenging journey, but one that has ultimately been rewarding both personally and professionally.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art revolves around capturing the beauty and intricacies of the world through photography. What sets me apart is my deep appreciation for the history and aesthetics of photography, which I developed from an early age. I draw inspiration from both classic and contemporary influences, blending them to create unique compositions that tell stories and evoke emotions. One of the aspects I’m most proud of is my dedication to continuous learning and exploration. Whether through studying books like *History and Aesthetic of Photography* or immersing myself in the breathtaking visuals of *National Geographic Traveler*, I’ve always sought to broaden my understanding of the medium and push the boundaries of my creativity.

Getting to where I am today professionally wasn’t always easy. The journey was filled with challenges, from technical hurdles to finding my unique voice in a crowded field. However, my passion for photography and the support of mentors, friends, and the inspiring work of others kept me going. I learned that persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace new experiences are key to overcoming obstacles.

One important lesson I’ve learned along the way is the value of staying true to my artistic vision. It’s easy to get caught up in trends or compare yourself to others, but I’ve found that the most meaningful work comes from an authentic place. I want the world to know that my brand and story are built on a foundation of genuine passion for capturing moments and telling stories through photography. My goal is to inspire others to see the world in new ways and appreciate the beauty around them.
