We had the good fortune of connecting with Mckenzie Hollis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mckenzie, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“What’s meant for me will find me.” Each milestone in my career has felt like a natural progression from the steps before it. Losing my job during the pandemic unexpectedly led me to start my own social media consulting business and explore DJing—a journey that ultimately led to a residency in Los Angeles and some more major DJing opportunities on the way. Looking back, everything has always happened at the right time, and I remind myself of this whenever I am questioning my path.

However, I also want to be clear that waiting for things to happen is not the message. You have to stay committed to your passions, keep your goals in sight, and the opportunities you’ve been preparing for will eventually come your way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career is all about creativity, passion, and resilience. What makes me stand out is this unique mix of DJing, lifestyle marketing, and social media consulting that I offer. It lets me create experiences that really connect with people. Getting to this point has been a journey. I had to juggle different roles and break into the industry, which made me resourceful and persistent.

One of the big turning points was when I got an internship at Power 106 for the morning show. Even though I was moving over two hours away from the radio station, for an entire year I committed to driving up every week and crashing with a family member just to be there and soak up all the industry knowledge they offered. That experience opened up so many doors and connected me with people who I am still working with through different avenues such as running social media campaigns for artists and becoming a DJ. Your relationships within the music industry are pivotal to your success. I’ve learned to stay adaptable, trust the process, and really value collaboration. My brand is about building authentic connections, bringing high energy, and creating moments that people won’t forget.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my best friend visits, it’s the perfect excuse to get out of my day routine and do some touristy activities. We’d kick things off with a hike picked out of Secret Stairs of LA, a book that explores hidden staircases around the city. After that, we’d grab coffee and bagels at Courage Bagels. My must order is the Run The Garden on an everything bagel. Another great plan is renting bikes at Hermosa Beach Pier where we can pedal up the boardwalk to Manhattan Beach. I love to find a spot up there to enjoy lunch and an Aperol spritz with a beach view!

Evenings would be all about hitting up the nightlife—ideally catching a concert at my favorite venue, The Greek Theater, to see one of the many talented artists who perform there. But more than likely, I’ll be bringing them along to one of my DJ gigs which has brought me to new places all over LA. I know whichever venue I’m spinning for, we’ll have a blast in the DJ booth and dance the night away. Level 8 in DTLA has been one of my favorite spots to spin at and also grab a nice dinner on the rooftop!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support, encouragement, and guidance I’ve received from so many people along the way. The list is long—cue the award speech music. Whether you’ve supported me on social media, come out to one of my gigs, or offered invaluable resources and business advice, you know who you are, and I am forever grateful for you. Amanda, Angie Vee, Brannon, Chucky Chavez, Ethan, Heidi Banks, Henry, Kiona, Krystal, Medek, Monica, Power 106, Sourmilk, Tayla, thank you for being a part of my journey.
