We had the good fortune of connecting with Melina Chadbourne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It’s a tale as old as time. Girls grow up together. Girls move away for work. Girls miss each other and love movies. A podcast is born.

We are three Bostonians cousins who grew up together, but now all of us live in different parts of the country. One day, one of us texted the group and asked, what if we started a podcast? We were all in! Our next challenge was to figure out what it was going to be about. We quickly decided it had to be about movies because all we did as kids was throw blankets and pillows on the floor, grab some unhealthy snacks, and put on a movie. We knew nothing else. But we wondered how would our perceptions changed now that we’re “grown-ups”? Were we even allowed to like some of these movies anymore? Was it safer to just cancel everything? Publicly, we could extol how problematic some of these movies were, but secretly… we still loved some. So, we decided to rewatch and discuss if the uh-oh’s and oh-no’s of these films are really, truly, all that cringe. In the end, we separately decide if the movie is worth staying with, should be dumped, or maybe we just need more time with it- although we admit it’s a toxic relationship. Ultimately, we’re in the business of tough love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are not professional podcasters. We are three Millennial Bostonians with a particular sense of humor that wanted to spend more time with each other. And that took the form of a podcast. When work moved us away from each other, it became so easy to lose touch, but this podcast is a way for us to connect over something that brings us joy. Our differing education, careers, and experiences allow each of us to speak to different things. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree, and sometimes it’s a mixed bag. Either way, we always bust each other’s chops. It’s a fun cocktail of movies, culture, and our own family dysfunction.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Aside from everyone involved in creating all the movies we review, we’d love to shout out Jake Bonesteel for his amazing work creating our theme song as well as Drew Santini for our great cover art!
