We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamany Vinson Bentz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamany, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I work with clients to cultivate their intellectual property so their business can be more valuable. Before I started my own firm though I worked for very large law firms. Most of the work I was doing at large firms was trying to fix problems with intellectual property that were created because companies did not get advice early enough in their growth to avoid the issue. I decided there had to be a better way to help companies and decided to focus on helping start ups and growing companies earlier in hopes that they never have problems with their intellectual property once they are successful. Starting my own firm gave me the flexibility to work with smaller and growing companies in a consistent way that I was not able to do on a large law firm platform.

What should our readers know about your business?
I run my own law firm and what sets me apart from others is the scope of experience I have in intellectual property and my ability to explain intellectual property in basic terms. I’ve practiced law for 20 years and am proud of all the hard work I put into learning about intellectual property, how it can be protected and how it can be monetized to my clients’ benefit. Learning all of it was never easy, especially because I learned all of it by doing the work. There were long spans of time that I worked seven days a week and only had dinner with my husband one night a week. At other times, I was home more but burning the candle at both ends and sleeping about four hours a night. Interestingly, I don’t regret any of it and I would do it all over again because learning all of it made me a really good attorney.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start with a walk on the Strand in Manhattan Beach then hit Simmzy’s for a meal and glass or glasses of wine. The rest of the week would be a SoCal taco tour. First stop, El Torazo in Long Beach. Then I’d spend a few days at the Montage in Laguna Beach. Then I’d head to The Taco Stand in La Jolla and Boboi Natural Gelato for dessert. I’d spend about a day in La Jolla and make sure to see the tide pools. Then I’d head back to LA and hit El Califa de León for tacos. If we had some time left I’d do some shopping on Abbot Kenney in Venice and have lunch or dinner at Gjelina.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As cliche as it sounds, it is my husband. He and I are high school sweethearts so he has known me a really long time. For all those decades, he has consistently reminded me that I should take risks because I have yet to fail at something I tried to do. He is the first person to tell other people how smart I am (I’ve heard he DM’d Elon Musk once and told him to put me on the Board of Tesla) and when things get overwhelming he tells me to take one thing at a time. Running a company is hard, being a female attorney is at times hard and giving up a career in big law to start a solo practice is hard. I could not have done it without him cheering me on along the way.
