We had the good fortune of connecting with Yu Tang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yu, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art represents the essence of human civilization, embodying humanity’s yearning and pursuit. Art is beauty, a beauty that is constantly evolving and improving. Film is a visual and auditory expression of modern art, as well as a complex of modern technology and art that can accommodate drama, photography, painting, music, dance, writing, sculpture, architecture and other arts.

Art is created, and the process of creation is complex, from the unconscious to the conscious, through the observation, experience, analysis and processing of the real world, the creator’s own worldview, outlook on life and values to create artistic images. Film, as an art form and cultural commodity, is brough to life through creation and production. At the same time, it carries unique entertainment, cultural, artistic, educational, and social value.

Since childhood, I grew up immersed in the influence of films, which brought reflection and positivity to my life. So, at the age of 36, I decided to reduce my project management work and shifted my focus towards film as a form of artistic creation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, and planner, as well as a recommender for Chinese films to participate in international film festivals, and an explorer dedicated to family education. As a film producer and planner, I have successfully produced and distributed 10 feature films(《Senior Entourage》《Tibetan Hearts》《On Matriarchy Lake》etc.); six short films(《Dedicated to Qiutong》《Teenagers in The Capital》《Mountain Streaming》etc.); Co-wrote four screenplays(《The Rose’s Fairy Legend 》《Classic of Universe》etc.). Currently, six films are planned and in the preparation stage. As a recommender for Chinese films to participate in international film festivals, I have successfully recommended more than 200 Chinese films to participate in international film festivals.

In nearly 20 years of working in the film industry, I am proud of the following:
1.In 2009, I recommended Chinese children’s films to the United States and Egypt to participate in international film festivals and won awards, becoming the recommender of Chinese children’s films, which are known as “environmental protection” films, to go international for the first time, and won praise from Chinese children’s filmmakers.
2.Since 2010, I have recommended nine kinds of Chinese opera films such as Yu Opera, Yang Opera, Xi Opera, and Cantonese opera to international film festivals, so that China’s diversified opera can be understood and appreciated by countries around the world.
3.Since 2013, I have recommended films from 23 ethnic groups, including Mongolian, Tibetan, MoSuo, and Zhuang, to international film festivals, so that China’s diverse ethnic culture can be understood and respected by the world.
4.The film “Dark Sword”, which I planned, was released in 2017 and received more than 600 million hits on the Chinese Internet.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, during my 18 years in the film industry, I have received a lot of support, help, and encouragement from many professionals in the industry. I am most grateful to the San Diego International Kid’s Film Festival team. They were the first to accept my recommendation of a Chinese-language children’s film and have offered Chinese-language films lots of opportunities, help and advice. Personally, I have learned and grown through the San Diego International Kid’s Film Festival, becoming a true filmmaker. I am especially thankful to the festival president Sherwood. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Photography from Southern Illinois University and a Master’s degree of in Film Arts from Ohio University. Since Sherwood entered the film industry, he worked as an editor on 20 feature films and served as a post-production supervisor on 25 films. Since 2013, he has served as President of the San Diego International Kid’s Film Festival, raising the festival to new heights.
