We had the good fortune of connecting with Vincenzo Lomio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vincenzo, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Growing up as an immigrant of the United States, I had very few guidelines to navigating life in this country. My content all centers around getting a deeper understanding of our life experiences and humanity. Currently, I have a YouTube channel @TheVinDiagram, a Substack Newsletter @TheVinDiagram, and a podcast @CreatingYourConditions.

I started making content on YouTube in early 2023 because I was reading a large volume of books (upwards of 60 books annually) but I didn’t feel I was doing anything useful with it by just reading it and starting another book. My favorite content to consume is productivity, interviews of successful people, and of course “comfort vloggers.”

In Fall of 2023, I decided to change my name to Vincenzo (or Vin for short) and I asked my friends to help me come up with a new Instagram handle. My dear friend Lem suggested The Vin Diagram and I immediately took to it. In my content, I frame that The Vin Diagram is the intersection of my life experiences, covering what I love most, which is understanding emotional intelligence alongside ambition.

I am still in the growing stages of it all, but I’m invigorated every time I create new ideas, processes, or have the opportunity to share others’ stories. None of us are one-dimensional by any means, and that’s a superpower I hope I am harnessing with The Vin Diagram.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I was growing up, my dad had a VHS store in Milan, Italy (where I was born), he re-produced, cut, and rented out VHS tapes to Filipinos in Italy. The store was a space of Filipino-Italian diaspora, diaspora meaning, the dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland. I was exposed to movies, shows and whatever events my dad needed to edit videos of (back then he literally cut and pasted physical tape to itself to edit videos). I got my first point and shoot camera when I was 12 or 13 and in high school, I was known as the person who “went to events” and “took all the photos and videos” from cultural events on-campus, band performances, drama plays, and sporting events.

When I went to college, I paid less and less attention to taking photos or videos and focused on my major or “career” of pursuing academia with a focus on history and ethnic studies (ethnic studies examines race, ethnicity, and power in the US and beyond). After graduating from UC San Diego, I realized I didn’t want to teach and I didn’t want to go into academia. I fell into a slew of random jobs: 85Degrees Baker (#FreshBread), a marketing job for two whole days, a nightclub promoter, an administrative assistant and whatever else I could do to make ends meet while living in San Diego.

Eventually, I fell into nonprofits and stuck it out there for the last 6 years (2018-2024). In the last two years, I started making book / self-development content and fell in love with it. In October of this year, I left my nonprofit job and I’m now pivoting for corporate jobs that are more related to marketing, communications, and branding.

I’m excited for this pivot because in content creation, every part of the process from editing videos to generating ideas has been so exciting for me. Anytime I logged off work, I jumped into a video I wanted to make or a book I knew I’d be making content about later on. Currently, none of my content is monetized (yet), but I’m finding so much value in making it that it doesn’t matter. I’ll do it for free as long as I have to and honestly, I’m not in a rush because I know as soon as money enters the playing field, the stakes change.

I’m still learning and all of this is still very new to me, but if I had one takeaway from learning how much I love being a creative, it’s that if you are obsessively working on something and doing it for free – there’s true passion and love for that, and you owe it to yourself to explore and nurture it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were in town, I’d probably find a cultural food event for us to go to – Los Angeles is bountiful in immigrant populations so good food is never hard to find. I’m a big fan of @DSNightMarket (Thai & International Foods) in Downtown. I’m also a sucker for a good bike ride, the beach and of course, a sunset – which I find myself in Venice a lot for, or the Belmont Shore area. Because I live in the “Gateway City” of Norwalk, on the outskirts of Los Angeles County touching Orange County, I also am at Knott’s Berry Farm a lot, as I have a season pass there through 2025. My best friend and I both love working at libraries, so I’d also probably take him to some while he’s visiting because we can’t be all play when we’re together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think the person who has influenced me most in content creation is Gary Vaynerchuk who owns branding/media companies but really just makes content that encourages people to figure out who they are, what they can bring to the world, and to do it with a level of emotional intelligence that is much needed in our society.

Also, shouts to my friend Vi @theskincareaffairs, who I met at a birthday party and recommended me to ShoutoutLA. It was encouraging to have the support of another creative to put me in a space I otherwise may have not have had access to.
