We had the good fortune of connecting with Irene Kao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Irene, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit—there’s something incredibly rewarding about creating something from scratch and bringing it to life. But it wasn’t until I faced a really tough period in my life that I discovered surfing, and everything changed. The ocean became my sanctuary, a place where I could find peace, heal, and reconnect. The love, light, and sense of belonging I felt in the waves sparked something deep within me. I began envisioning apparel that captured the essence of the ocean, but when I couldn’t find anything that resonated with me, I realized I needed to create it myself. That’s how Sunlit Surf Co. was born.

Sunlit Surf Co. became my way of bringing the healing power of the sea to others. It’s about embracing simplicity, authenticity, and the peace I found in the waves—values that are at the heart of everything I do. Whether you’re a surfer, a beach lover, or just someone who wants to carry a piece of the ocean with you, I wanted to create something that connects people to the sea, wherever they are.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my professional life in a completely different sector—finance. I took that path because I was scared of the unknown, and it seemed like the ‘safe’ choice at the time. But over time, I realized I was living someone else’s version of success, not my own. It took a lot of courage and introspection to admit I wasn’t on the path that was right for me.

Breaking away wasn’t easy. There were moments of self-doubt, and plenty of obstacles along the way, but through it all, I discovered what I truly love and where my strengths lie: creating and bringing ideas to life. That’s when Sunlit Surf Co. was born. It wasn’t about financial success—it was about finding fulfillment and building something meaningful. Even though Sunlit Surf Co. is still in its early stages, it has already brought so much joy and purpose to my life.

The ethos behind Sunlit Surf Co. is rooted in embracing the journey—the growth, the challenges, and the courage to move forward. Creating this brand was my opportunity to grow, to step into the unknown, and to put myself out there in a way I never had before. I’ve learned that when I’m scared or uncertain, that’s often when I know I’m on the right path. It’s the moments of fear that push me forward and remind me that I’m exactly where I need to be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Day 1: Open Water Swim & Farmer’s Market
We’ll kick things off with an open water swim at Tower 26 with my swim group. There’s no better way to start the day than jumping into the cold Pacific—such a refreshing way to wake up! Afterward, we’ll head to the local farmer’s market for a bite. It’s a great spot with fresh, local goodies and a lively vibe.

Day 2: Malibu Hike & Seafood
On day two, we’re off to Malibu for a hike with breathtaking coastal views. I’m so grateful we have such beautiful nature just a short drive away. After the hike, we’ll grab fresh seafood at Malibu Seafood—it’s right by the water, and the food is absolutely delicious.

Day 3: Surfing & Healthy Eats
Next, we’ll spend the day surfing at San Onofre. It’s one of my favorite spots—perfect for a relaxed surf session, soaking up the chill vibe of the surf community. Afterward, we’ll stop by High Tide Coffee for a coffee (I love sitting outside and soaking in the sunshine) and grab a healthy bowl at Active Culture to refuel.

Day 4: Bike Ride & Sunset
We’ll bike along the Marvin Braude Trail, which stretches along the coast from Pacific Palisades all the way to Torrance. It’s an easy ride with stunning ocean views. When we’re ready to relax, we’ll grab a bite in Hermosa Beach. Then, we’ll wrap up the day by catching the sunset—the sunsets here are honestly some of the most beautiful in the world.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to the MBA community at Berkeley Haas! It was during my time there as a student where I got the courage to make my dreams a reality. There’s something really powerful about a community that encourages you to be yourself and pursue what your heart desires.
