We had the good fortune of connecting with Angie Shell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angie, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing I know I definitely hadn’t thought of when I first started out, was how everything travels via word of mouth. Creating a network of creatives you not only can work with fluidly, but have a common mutual vision is so important. Keeping those people close and moving up with integrity has always been a prominent thought in my mind as I navigate the industry throughout my career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My particular style mixes the avant garde with the monster. I’ve specialized in injury for the longest time and having so much beauty experience under my belt I love a good hybrid makeup.
A lot of my themes are often pulled from inspiration of my hometown of Lancaster Pennsylvania. Most might not realize this but growing up it had been a vibrant environment for the modern day punk scene. I constantly find so much of my work pulled to leather distressed jackets, and brightly colored wardrobe to dress my creatures in. I hope to do more of that this coming year as it’s very reflective of my personality. I think about artists like Vivienne Westwood and how she had such an edge to such dainty and feminine pieces and. I think, “I want to do that but as a monster.”

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first stop would have to be my makeup chair! Most of my friends that visit have an inevitable fate of modeling for me. I’m grateful in that regard as I know it’s a big ask.
In all seriousness however, I always take my favorite people to Millie’s for brunch in Pasadena where I’m currently based, The Hat for lunch, and for dinner you can never go wrong with Salsa and Beer in the San Fernando Valley, or Avra in Beverly Hills if you are feeling chic and craving Greek.
It’s also crucial that you take a morning trip to Magnolia Blvd in Burbank, get coffee from the Palm, and walk through all the shops like Play Clothes, It’s a Wrap, Halloweentown, and of course Bearded Ladies Vintage & Oddities.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
At this point there’s just so many people and organizations to thank. I’d be so fortunate to obtain qualities that the people who have taught and guided me possess. I have to give credit to my beauty mentors that had taught me before I even moved out west, Kayla Fetterolf and Elizabeth Schopf.

We had all been affiliated with the same company, (Bare Minerals), and on top of working as counter girls we also took appointments. At the age of 18, this was a dream come true to me. These girls with all their ability and style gave me something to truly strive for. Both of them being graduates from various makeup schools, it had become so clear to me that I had no choice but to see the blueprint for what I had to do in my career next.
Despite specializing in practical effects and all things monster and gore related, I feel grateful for that chapter of my life everyday as many artists that inspire me, such as Donni Davy, are versatile and well rounded in both beauty and FX.

So to the ladies that taught me early on about skin prep, looking down for your liner or lashes, and how to do your best looks when you’re running out the door. Cheers to you.
