We had the good fortune of connecting with Pat Kramer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pat, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I started my career as a news journalist working in radio. After about ten years in that industry, I got burnt out on reporting on mostly tragic news and left radio to pursue work in Cable TV marketing. However, after a few years in that industry, although I was making more money, I missed interviewing people and writing news stories. Once a writer – always a writer!

One day, I was invited to attend a business networking organization’s meeting by a friend of my family. When the woman asked me what I did for work, I told her I was a writer but I didn’t have my own business. At that time, I was working for an advertising agency, 9 – 5, as an office manager. Well after attending that meeting and saying I was a writer, I began to believe that I could start my own business. That first year was a bit rough but I had a full-time job to support myself so I wasn’t depending on my new business for paying my bills.

Running your own business puts you through a lot of changes. You learn by making mistakes and eventually, either you get better at doing it or you go back to being an employee of someone else’s company. For me, the desire to write was motivating me to stick it out. I wanted to write positive stories about people and their businesses to help them become more prosperous and that’s how Writer For Hire®, my business of 30 years, got started. It did it on my own but a lot of people helped me along the way.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I am known as Writer For Hire® which is essentially my registered trademark. I’m a full-time, professional writer (sometimes called a ghostwriter) of business materials, website and blog content, social media profiles, press releases, bios, newsletters, books and memoirs. What sets me apart from other people who write content is my 30+ years of experience as a news journalist. When you work in that industry every day for years, you learn to work on deadlines and to really listen and ask for important information and details that can help illustrate what you write.

That experience is what I bring to each project: knowing how to write content that delivers a unique message, that is readable, interesting, and that is memorable. I work with clients in a range of industries. While they are experts in what they do, my expertise is in describing their work effectively in words so that others immediately “get it.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
With COVID restrictions right now, I would probably take them on a drive to the ocean, the mountains and the desert. We have so many different climate zones in Southern California. We have a variety of experiences that we can have, depending on weather and what you want to experience. I enjoy the outdoors so I would take them to historic locations, local roadside stands, hiking trails, and beautiful scenic views. Depending on what kind of cuisine they want to try, I’m sure I could find whatever they want – and more. Also, I like to cook so I would probably have them spend part of that time enjoying meals in my home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My thanks go to all of the associations and organizations I have belonged to at one time or another to learn the skills I needed to run my business. The list is a lengthy one but it started with LeTip, then Women’s Referral Service, Independent Writers of Southern California, National Association of Women Business Owners, Business & Professional Women of Sunland-Tujunga, Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce, Entertainment Publicists Professional Society, Women in Transportation, Asian Business Association, and most importantly, ProVisors of Los Angeles. It takes a village to run a small business!
