We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Tecson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue an artistic career because I desired to become a full-time artist, specializing in portraits and coins with classical and traditional art techniques.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I created my social media platforms to share my work with the public, it was difficult to attract clients who would be interested in commissioned work. It wasn’t until I decided to shift my focus onto coins that dealers and clients began to contact me. This has opened doors for me to work with dealers and clients, getting their favorite coins painted or drawn in my style. I’m grateful to say that my work currently spans 20 states and is expanding as we speak.

I’m proud to be an artist with this particular niche because it plays on something that I personally enjoy outside of painting, that is, coin collecting and trading. This in mind helps me persevere through the harder days and challenges, as I’ve learned lessons through this niche that I probably wouldn’t have learned otherwise. Moving forward, I hope for my work to expand worldwide and for people to enjoy both good art and this niche of coin collecting.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anywhere involving the beach, and coins is all I’d need for a nice day with a friend. Laguna Beach has a special place in my heart because of the art culture out there, as well as my love for coins being revived. So being able to enjoy both with a friend is all that I’d need to be inspired and to enjoy good company.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s a person named Dr. Donald H. Kagin who I’d like to recognize. A numismatic author known for writing a universal acclaimed book called “Private Gold Coins and Pattern of the United States”, I learned about a contest for their 2021 catalog auction book online. I completed my “1907 $20 High Relief” painting and was later notified by his team that my painting was selected to be the front cover for their next edition. This chance opportunity changed and set the trajectory of my career, thus motivating me to create more coin art.
