Meet Alyssa Kuhl | Director & Screenwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Kuhl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Honestly, getting with a great group of people who aren’t afraid to give you criticism, but also know you, & want you to succeed. Garnering genuine people who surround your art with support from all angles is the best way to success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today. I moved out to California all alone, knowing not a single person, and I was able to put myself through film school, & move to LA to become an independent filmmaker with little to no connections. I kept the thought of “this will work itself out in your favor” in my head and it led me to fruition. Believing in yourself, championing yourself, & FORCING everyone else believe you have something important to say is how you stay on the pulse, and how you are able to move throughout our industry. As women, and especially women of color, we are sold short. We are told that we already have enough of our stories, but that’s NEVER true. We are here and we are loud and we are coming to your screens- small & large. There ain’t been enough of us yet.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Feliz area is the best place in LA, by far. If you want to have a good time, East Hollywood, Silverlake, Los Feliz…even Frogtown…The girlies and the gays will show you a spectacular time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shout-out to Blair Gun, one of the bands who has helped be gain recognition & respect in the industry, and also my fellow girlies of color, who have inspired me to be more than what the rest of the world expects us to be.
