We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Yim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
As a business owner, there will be failures and there will be victories. With every business path there is struggle, but if you really want something, you have to strive for it and push through the obstacles that are thrown at you. If you figure out the “why” in life, then everything else is worth fighting through. My biggest “why” is my parents and grandmother. I am a 2nd generation Cambodian American and was born in Long Beach, California. I didn’t come from a wealthy home, however my parents worked hard for my 3 siblings and I. My parents and grandmother were refugees fleeing Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge, a genocide that heartlessly killed millions; their escape story became my driving force. I know that if my parents were to give up in the concentration camps and not fight their way to get to America, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Their story stuck in the back of my head and is a reminder day in and day out to not give up on my dreams. Giving up on your passion is not as easy as giving up on something that wasn’t meant for you! For example, I cannot give up on my permanent make up business. However, it was definitely easier for me to give up on my 9-5 accounting job because it wasn’t something I loved doing. I have only given up if a situation doesn’t give me peace or intrigue me enough to give my attention to. Usually, when I sense a bad vibe, I tend to do some research to help me discern whether something is worth my time and energy. Surrendering things that do not serve me or make me happy allows me to experience peace of mind and tranquility. When my passion project became a full-time reality, I knew I found the principle of my path to success. I will never stop pursuing this dream because it gives me bliss and a great sense of satisfaction each time I see my clients walk out my door smiling. Although I have bigger goals to pursue, I know that with consistency and time, I will get there. Success is a never-ending journey. The future version of myself is what keeps me on my toes and motivated. Joss Whedon quotes, “Obsession is beautiful. It’s what makes art”. Creating brows is an art and permanent makeup is my obsession.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Eyebrows are not a one shape fits all. On average, I spend about 3 hours to create eyebrows that will not only frame my client’s face but fit with their lifestyle. Because of my brow obsession, appointments with my clients are more personable. I love connecting with my clients because when they trust me with their eyebrow tattoo, they will refer me to their family and friends. Over the years, this way of servicing my clients has created a great instagram community for me and I’m most excited and humble when students choose me to educate them. I would say sharing my knowledge with others is the most rewarding of my career. Offering free work and lots of late night practices got me to where I am today. I am pretty hard on myself when it comes to my work. I have this obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) with critiquing my own work. With being OCD, it allows me to improve my work and always do better than the last. Along this journey, I’ve learned that you have to surround yourself with people who clap for you when you win. You will have friends who won’t believe in you but you have to keep pushing and continue to believe in yourself. Beccs Brows is really about creating personalized brows that will reflect who you are and give you a good brow day everyday.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Long Beach is a great place to explore with my best friend! Here are some things we would do together: -hang out at Rosie’s dog beach -catch a comedy at the laugh factory -hike & catch the sunset at hilltop park -buy a day pass at Iconix Fitness to workout with a view -enjoy a ferry ride to explore the queen mary -do yoga on the beach -cycle on the beach shores -visit shoreline village -Go shopping at the pike outlets -go bowling at cal bowl Long Beach are also known for weekend brunch and unlimited mimosas, here are a few we would do: -schooner or later -the breakfast bar -vibes beach cafe -the local spot -plunge Here are more favorite food places we would hit up: -Blue bowl at the Long Beach exchange -poutine fries at the Kroft -ice cream from Long Beach Creamery -Hug life vegan ice cream on 4th st. -pig pen delicacy for some mac n cheese burgers -Long Beach Thai -Phnom Penh Noodle shack for some authentic Cambodian dishes -The attic -panxa -Nicks on 2nd -Aburi for all you can eat sushi -Boathouse by the bay -i luv sushi Favorite shopping: -2nd and PCH -Long Beach exchange -the pike For drinks: -the blind donkey -mezcalero -congregation ale house -ballast point brewery -bo-beau rooftop -the federal bar -Legends on 2nd -roxannes

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
