We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Billy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Any perceived success that I have is down to a work ethic. And I say perceived because success is relative. When I started my creative journey decades ago, my definition of success and my goals were very different to what they are today. But I always knew that nothing would be handed to me on a platter and that I had to get up and push hard every day. I developed a work ethic that I am both proud of, and disappointed by……. because finding the balance is almost impossible for me and other things suffer. But that brings me back to my definition of success now, which would be to enjoy the moment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have overcome some significant challenges in life, and continue to try to change and grow as a human being. I believe that change and growth is what makes success. I came out of a 15 year drug addiction with nothing. And I have tried my best to change behaviours and become a self supporting member of society ever since. The music has lived inside of me since I was a kid, so that came naturally to me. I taught myself how to play guitar, and the natural instinct to write music just came out. Luck played a huge part of my musical journey, joining The Cult and then being asked to join Billy Idol. But I never took any opportunity for granted and have worked hard to be the best musician I can be at every step. The last 16 years in Billy Idol’s band has forced me to become a good player and I am hugely grateful for the opportunity. My visual / fine art journey began about 14 years ago when a close friend of mine convinced me that I should try painting. I did, and it was so cathartic for me and so powerful that I have forged a career in art as well, running parallel to the music. Both art forms enable me to exorcise any internal demons that I may have, and give me a sense of freedom and a creative voice that I clearly need in my life. Moving forward, I try to learn from the people around me, and those that inspire me. I think that the moment you decide there is nothing left to learn, is the moment your creative force begins to die.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to say that Billy Idol’s long time partner, guitarist and songwriter, Steve Stevens, is the reason that I have spent 16 years in the band, and have grown exponentially as a guitar player myself.
