Meet Elaine Kopinga | President and Founder, Obaatan Midwifery & Postpartum

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elaine Kopinga and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elaine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was born in West Africa, where there is a beautiful tradition of the entire village coming together to support mothers during the postpartum period. When I went through my own postpartum experience, my family and loved ones carried on that tradition, surrounding me with care and support, not just for the baby, but in every part of life. It was a rich and deeply nurturing experience, one that many new mothers in America don’t get to have. Too often, they are isolated, exhausted, and lacking the support they need to truly thrive. My goal in starting this business was to bring the tradition of postpartum confinement, practiced by many cultures around the world, to the United States, where it is so urgently needed.

What should our readers know about your business?
Obaatan Midwifery & Postpartum is working to change the way women receive care throughout their pregnancy and postpartum through the melding of eastern and western philosophies. Every woman has unique needs, and each stage of pregnancy and postpartum requires a focused and customized level of care. In the United States, the level of care is expensive and lacks the nurturing, compassion, and teaching women require in this critical stage of their lives. Our postpartum doulas and nannies are on hand at all hours of the day to deliver thoughtful advice, support with breastfeeding, prepare delicious home-cooked meals, assist with cleaning and laundry, and provide postpartum baths for mom and baby, an experience that touches every aspect of their lives and prepares them for what’s in store.
Why did I start Obaatan? I believe that we prioritize maternal health, we create a ripple effect that strengthens entire communities. By focusing on the well-being of mothers during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, we lay the foundation for healthier newborns and stronger families. This helps reduce the risk of postpartum depression and gives women the support and education they need to thrive. When mothers feel seen, supported, and cared for, their children and families benefit—and so does the wider community.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The support of my family has served as the backbone of my business. Having people who believe in me, especially on the days I struggle to believe in myself, has made all the difference.
