We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Becerra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Thank you for sharing your story—it’s heartfelt and inspiring. Here’s a polished version that keeps your voice and authenticity while refining the structure and flow. This could work well for your website, a bio, or social media intro:

How It All Started

Landing in the event industry wasn’t part of a plan—it happened naturally, and unexpectedly. Back in 2012, I was working as an office manager for an import/export company. It was a financially rewarding job, but I felt there was no more room to grow. At the same time, my daughter was about to start school, and my son needed speech therapy, so I made the decision to step away from full-time work.

Looking for a creative outlet, I began taking dessert classes. Making desserts became my stress reliever—something that kept my hands and mind busy. I started sharing my creations on my personal social media, just for fun. Slowly, friends and family began reaching out, asking me to make desserts for their events. That small spark of interest led me to take more classes—this time in balloon design and floral arrangements.

It was flowers that truly captured my heart. They became more than a hobby—they became my therapy.

Today, I run Dulcemar Creations, offering full event design and decor services. What started as a creative outlet has grown into a business rooted in passion, family, and artistry. I’ve also expanded into retail with Dulcemar Creations The Shop, my very own flower shop where I bring joy and beauty to everyday moments.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Dulcemar Creations, we take great pride in being one of the most referred event planning businesses in the area for quinceañeras, sweet sixteens, and weddings. While we may not be the least expensive option in town, we are known for going above and beyond to bring our clients’ visions to life—with exceptional customer service every step of the way.

We believe that every celebration should be as unique as the person being honored. That’s why we begin each event with an in-person consultation—to understand your vision, discuss your budget, and start creating something truly personal. No two events are alike, and we make sure that every detail is tailored to reflect your style and needs.

One of the biggest challenges in this industry is finding vendors who share our dedication to the client and the successful execution of their special day. Through years of experience, we’ve learned that flexibility and preparation are key—so we always plan for the unexpected, with backups from A to Z.

We work only with vendors we trust—people with strong ethics, reliability, and heart—so that when we refer someone, we do so with confidence.

At the heart of Dulcemar Creations is a commitment to honesty, kindness, and love. When you book with us, you’re not just hiring a planner—you’re gaining a team that genuinely cares about making your celebration unforgettable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in town is anywhere I can bring my kids, family, and friends to relax while supporting local, family-owned businesses. I’m very intentional about the places I visit and where I choose to spend my money. You’ll usually find me at a neighborhood ice cream shop or unwinding at a nearby park. I’m always up for a long weekend road trip and love exploring the towns I visit—especially when they have that local charm and a strong sense of community.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My three children, along with my parents and siblings, form the foundation of my support system—they’re always there for me. I actively seek out learning opportunities from individuals I admire and consider mentors. I intentionally surround myself with like-minded, positive people who uplift and inspire me. Despite the busyness of life, I make it a priority to volunteer at my children’s school, offering not just my time but also my professional skills to make a meaningful impact in my community.
