We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Sandsengen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factors behind my success is hard work, discipline and persistence. I was taught from an early age to never give up no matter how difficult things might be, and to always do my best. And maybe the most important thing I was thought was to dream big.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think we all have a unique voice, and we musicians play out that voice through our instrument. I have all the way been very careful and well aware of the importance of speaking/playing straight from my heart and nothing more or less. I think that’s the only way to express our art, and if we do it any differently it’s like we are lying. I have gotten a lot of negative feedback for this over the years, especially from other educated musicians saying that my phrasing or dynamics in the music is weird or wrong, but this is just the way I talk through the guitar and will always continue to do that. If we don’t do things from the heart, what is then the point? Our goal as artists is to speak to hearts, and hopefully give people something, and we are not able to do that unless we are authentic.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If it was Oslo, I would take them to Tim Wendelboe’s coffee and have a coffee to go, take a walk by the river and down to the Norwegian Opera and Ballet and walk on the roof there to get a view. I would then take them ice bading in the Oslo Fjord, and them to Neseblod Records (Helvete) so they could get a little black metal history. I would also take them to one of my favourite places; Emanuel Vigeland’s mausoleum.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my dad. It was him that thought me to dream big and never give up. He was also the main motivator and support in my life. I think, to have love and support in your life is crucial to your wellness and successes. I also want to dedicate my shoutout to the one and only Martin Haug, my former guitar teacher who introduced me to classical guitar and who encouraged me and supported me in a way that still helps me today, many years later!
