We had the good fortune of connecting with Janessa Mercado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janessa, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because it’s a part of me that I simply can’t ignore, even if I tried. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been drawn to music and anything artistic. I’ve been singing since I was three years old, writing songs in my room and then running out to the living room to perform them for my mom and dad. If I had to explain why I chose this path, it would be because my heart and soul truly longed for it. I knew there was nothing else that would make me happier than building a career around something I’m deeply passionate about. I feel the most seen when I’m around other artists and creatives. Even if it weren’t considered a career, it would still be something I turn to as an outlet to help me cope with life. I truly believe it’s a part of who I am and I honestly can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is JANESSA, and I’m a singer and songwriter. Music has always been my passion & my escape. I love putting on headphones and tuning out the world… yes, I’m a Pisces. I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember. While I make music for everyone, I especially create for those who can connect with the message or feel something in their soul. My music comes straight from the heart.

I’m proud of every project I’ve released. Creatively, I believe in my craft and in the work I pour into my art. Right now, I’m incredibly excited to share that I’ll be releasing my debut album, Still Bloom, this August. I’ve been working on it for over a year with my friend and collaborator, producer/rapper KVR. It’s been a long time coming, and I couldn’t be more ready for the world to hear it.

As an independent artist, I’ve faced many challenges, especially when it sometimes feels like you’re doing everything on your own. But I’ve learned that so much is possible when you have a solid team behind you and people who genuinely want the best for you. I’m constantly learning and growing, whether it’s from performing live, doing interviews like this one, or just navigating the day-to-day journey of being an artist.

What I want the world to know about me is that I’m human. I go through things, just like anyone else, but music is what gets me through. My hope is that when people listen to my songs, they feel seen, understood, or even just a little less alone.

The meaning behind Still Bloom is a reminder to myself and to everyone listening: no matter what life throws at us, we can keep growing. I’m still blooming into the most beautiful version of myself, and I believe everyone deserves the chance to do the same.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I’d probably start by taking them to a really cute thrift shop. Then we’d hit up a music store to check out some records and CDs. I also love picking up posters there. I’d definitely take them to Guitar Center too, because I love playing around with the microphones or just admiring all the guitars.

We’d try all kinds of food. I mean, I love Mexican food (because I’m Mexican!), but I’m also obsessed with Italian, Mediterranean, Indian, soul food, and a good seafood boil. I really love almost everything. After that, we’d walk it off with a visit to the Griffith Observatory or head to the beach. I’m happiest anywhere near water, so even chilling by the lake or hanging at home by the pool is fun for me.

We’d also have to find somewhere with live music and a dance floor. There’s nothing better than dancing outside to live instruments, it’s such a vibe. And for a little movement, I’d probably take us to play some tennis or go for a hike, just so we’re not eating and drinking the whole trip!

To top it all off, I’d definitely enjoy a nice cocktail or two and if I’m feeling it, maybe even a little joint, because hey, I’m grown and I live in California!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shout-out to my mom, my dad, and also my mom’s family friend, Priscilla. These three people have supported me at different points in my life and have truly pushed me to stand ten toes down on my ideas and dreams of becoming a known singer and songwriter. During times when I was at my lowest or doubted my craft, I could always count on encouragement from at least one of them, whether it was an opportunity to perform and gain exposure or simply uplifting words. Without their presence in my life, I don’t think I would’ve had that extra push or the motivation to turn my dream into a reality. They’ve helped me keep going, push my limits, and live by the phrase “the sky’s the limit.”
