We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my business because I needed help! I was trying to work in a law firm while manage a new podcast and I was over my head with work and tasks. I created templates and outlines to make sense of the task load and see where I could find shortcuts. Well, the shortcut was streamlining the processes and hiring an assistant to complete the tasks that didn’t require my immediate attention. Once I had an additional set of hands, I could see how other business owners could benefit from my processes and I talked about it on social media for over a year before attracting my dream client. You don’t have a business until you have a paying client, so at that point I knew I was onto something.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is expanding brand awareness and visibility for business owners through podcasting. What sets me apart is that I work with business owners to identify their brand, why their business provides solutions to issues, and we craft their brand story. I used podcasting to expand my own brand and first began daydreaming of entrepreneurship so I knew podcasting was the best medium for brand visibility. Podcasting is perfect for getting in the ears of your dream customers. Most business owners are either shy or scared to talk about their business because they want the work to speak for itself, which is not the best method.
I got to where I am business-wise by taking risks and discussing my business on social media. This path was not easy at all. I undercharged my first client, and my second client told me it was too much money and to keep the money; they would be donating it to me. Ouch! This was not an easy lesson to learn, but it taught me that I needed to raise my prices to attract a specific client and manage their expectations of the amount of teamwork needed to expand their brand. The only way I stayed consistent through my challenges was by working a day job for 14 months, until I attracted my dream client. Working for someone else reminded me why I wanted to be an entrepreneur and give all my energy to my own projects.
The best lessons that I learned from running a business are to improve one process every day and consistently increase your prices. You need to keep improving so that you are always aware of what’s happening in the industry how to make your clients’ lives better. You increase your prices because with each client, your expertise grows; especially if you have 4-6 month projects with clients and invest real time working with them. Your knowledge is valuable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend were visiting Columbus, Ohio, I would take them to German Village for macarons and lattes on the patio. Then we would walk through Schiller Park and feed the ducks. The next day, we would spend time at Easton Town Center to have lunch at Del Mar, shop, and enjoy some Jeni’s ice cream. Later that week, I would take my friend to KD Creative to show them around the podcast studio and give them a behind the scenes look at the business office. We would end the week at Ohio State where we would walk the campus, enjoy people watching, and grab lunch at Adriatico’s Pizza. Because my job is editing audio and social media, I like to go outside as often as possible and touch grass.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shout out to Rachel Rodgers, the author of We Should All Be Millionaires (WSABM). I read this book in 2022 and it broke my brain in a good way! I hadn’t realized that I had stopped dreaming and was just going through the motions until I read this book. Rachel encourages the readers to make a list of everything we want in life and the cost so we can see how much money our dream life would require. I cried when I saw the number because it honestly wasn’t as large as I feared which meant that a dream life was attainable! With chapters about creating a Million Dollar Squad, Million Dollar Boundaries, and Million Dollar Decisions, the WSABM helped me realize that I was playing too small. After reading this book, I decided to hire a business coach to grow my podcast, gain additional attention, and teach me to be profitable in business.
