We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Berry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought Process behind starting my own business was ownership, legacy and control. I have always wanted to be a 1 stop shop for music in the bay area. The studio, The label, the Video Production even the Venue for concerts side of things. Now that ive been a studio owner for about 10 years i knew i would have to get to know the business side of the music industry better. It started with Sync Licensing and now Music Publishing. I realized in my Sync Licensing dealings that i didnt know enough of the backend stuff going on to have my own best instrest in the deals. From being lied to, Told to not worry about it. I knew if i wanted to continue to grow my own personal catalog the correct way i would need to learn more about where the money comes from and how to collect it properly. That way i can make the correct decisions in my own personal dealing. For me im making the Modern Producer Blue Print. But the business im creating is Everything from Production/Recording In my studio, Distribution of music through my Label, Royalty Collections through my Publishing Company. And Sync licensing though my Catalog. By using My experience through doing it all myself for the past 10 years i’ve been able to recreate the music industry business structure all through own businesses and in so i keep 100% of Ownership and maximize my royalty collections.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started a Music Duo with my best friend called Nbdy Nprtnt. Since then we have gained over 220 million impressions across all online platforms. Signed for Sync Licensing to top companys like, Artlist, UMG and A&G. landed placements with brands like Mc Donalds, Smart (Car), For Ever 21 and been placed on tv shows and movies like Love Island etc. Since then i have started 10 new Aliases all built for Sync Licensing. Building my Label and my Catalog with Artistic Collaborations that now all have their own home. keeping the genres and themes relative to each project and making my catalog shine.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting i would take them to venice and soak up the sun
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my story i would have to shout out my Dad. He taught me at a young age that someone will do that job so why not you? Ive kept this with me my whole life. I truely belive i can do anything i put my mind to. Also i would like to shout out Lamont Graves of the Graves Firm. He is 100% the best source of information when trying to begin your learning in how to turn your talent into money in the music industry.
