Meet Tal Khan | Candidate for Judicial Office

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tal Khan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tal Khan, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Public service makes me happy because it allows me to advance justice in meaningful ways—helping reduce barriers, alleviate hardship, and ensure people are treated fairly. Contributing to a more just and equitable society is deeply fulfilling to me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an immigrant, I started from the ground up—working as a dishwasher while finding my footing in a new country. Along the way, I experienced Islamophobia and homophobia firsthand. Those moments didn’t deter me—they clarified my purpose.
I chose to become an attorney because I wanted to stand at the intersection of fairness and power, and to be part of a system that, at its best, protects people who are too often overlooked.
I began my career in complex civil litigation, but I was drawn to work that directly impacts people’s lives. That led me to the District Attorney’s Office, where I’ve spent years in the courtroom handling serious cases and working at the intersection of public safety, accountability, and rehabilitation.
What sets me apart is that my work extends beyond the courtroom. I’ve served as a Commissioner bridging government and the LGBTQ+ community, and I’ve focused on expanding access to justice and legal education. I believe justice is not just about outcomes—it’s about whether people feel seen, heard, and respected.
The path wasn’t easy, but it was intentional. Every challenge reinforced my commitment to service.
My story is ultimately about transformation—about building a life in service of a justice system that is more fair, more accessible, and more human.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, I’d want them to experience the full energy and diversity of Southern California, starting close to home in Long Beach. We’d begin with a relaxed morning by the water: coffee, a walk along the shoreline, and time around Shoreline Village. Long Beach has its own vibe, coastal, diverse, and a little more laid-back. It’s the perfect way to ease into the week.
Then we’d head into Los Angeles. A beach day in Santa Monica, followed by sunset in Venice Beach to take in the creativity and street culture.
Midweek would be all about food and culture. I would take them for a late-night Korean BBQ in Koreatown, after exploring Downtown Los Angeles for art, architecture, and a show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
We’d spend time in Silver Lake and Echo Park enjoying great coffee, independent shops, and that creative, local feel.
Of course, we’d hike up to Griffith Observatory for those iconic city views.
And throughout the week, I’d make sure they experience the diversity of the region through food, from taco trucks to neighborhood staples in places like Boyle Heights.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my chosen family—a close circle of friends who have embraced me, celebrated me, and consistently encouraged me to pursue my goals in public service. Their support has grounded me and given me the confidence to keep moving forward.
