We had the good fortune of connecting with Pier’jea Lyon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pier’jea, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Everything I do is rooted in service and care. Through JT Legacy Solutions, I help entrepreneurs and families understand their finances, make informed decisions, and build strong foundations for their businesses. I work across multiple generations, guiding clients to avoid costly mistakes and create long-term stability. Nothing brings me greater joy than helping someone transform an idea into a sustainable venture that can stand the test of time.

Be an Ally was born from my commitment to advocacy and accessibility. It provides immediate access to social justice resources, mental health support, and safe ways to take action based on individual circumstances. As a retired Army Captain, I understand that not everyone can protest publicly but everyone deserves access to reliable information, safe allyship, and support. I strive to be a consistent advocate for those whose voices are too often overlooked.

Untethered Moms is another part of my heart. It serves as a restorative oasis where women can reconnect with themselves and feel supported through every season of motherhood. We foster authentic conversations, offer evidence-based emotional tools, and remind mothers that they are allowed to be whole. They are allowed to grow, rest, and find joy. Untethered Moms exists to give women space to breathe, and a community to belong to.

Outside of my professional work, my family and I continue a tradition built on compassion and giving. We serve underserved communities, distribute goods to the homeless, and host the annual Hatcher Family Toy Drive every holiday season. For us, service isn’t a talking point, it’s a way of life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
JT Legacy Solutions was built upon a foundation my grandmother started long before I ever imagined becoming a business owner. When I inherited the business, I committed to honoring her legacy while expanding it to meet the needs of modern entrepreneurs. I took what she created and transformed it into a space where people can ask questions without judgment, understand their options, and learn to build stability that lasts.

Untethered Moms is my other pride and joy co-created from lived experience and a deep understanding of what mothers truly need: connection, restoration, and growth. Unlike other mom organizations, Untethered Moms provides evidence-based resources and community care to support women through every stage of their journey. It’s an oasis for clarity, compassion, and empowerment where moms can feel seen, supported, and whole. (Join us at our next curated event in September!)

What sets my work apart is intentional listening and research-driven insight. I never rush transformation. Whether through JT Legacy Solutions or Untethered Moms, my approach is grounded in clarity, compassion, and long-term impact.

Getting to this point was far from easy. I expanded both businesses while raising two boys, working full-time, volunteering, and pursuing my Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Those experiences taught me discipline, emotional intelligence, and the importance of curiosity. They shaped how I lead whether redesigning HR systems, mentoring entrepreneurs, or creating safe spaces for women navigating identity and change.

Everything I build is for those who don’t always see themselves represented. I carry my journey, from inner-city roots to international experiences, with deep gratitude. My work honors families who gave selflessly, mothers redefining themselves, and young Black girls who dream boldly despite the odds. I lead in boardrooms, community spaces, and my own home as living proof that perseverance through adversity is possible.

Above all, I’ve learned the value of faith, community, and rest. Hard work matters, BUT so does balance. Your past doesn’t define your future; it refines it. And when you allow yourself to show up fully and uniquely you discover the powerful places where you truly belong.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The question is not if, it’s when. I love hosting, and I’m blessed to have multiple best friends who come visit me. As a proud SoCal native, I always want them to experience the best of both worlds. Living in Orange County gives me access to a slower, coastal pace while still being close enough to enjoy the energy of LA.

We would start the morning in the OC with a hike and beautiful views, then ease into the day at a local coffee shop or a quiet breakfast spot where we can actually sit, talk, reflect, and catch up. From there, we are heading straight to the beach. There is something about the ocean that resets you, and I always want my guests to feel that calm.
Over the weekend, we would make our way to LA to explore some of my favorite spots. I love good food, so I would take them to Dama in the DTLA Arts District for a Latin restaurant experience that has something for everyone. The vibe is beautiful and the flavors are top-tier. I would also make it a point to visit Black-owned spots like Hilltop Coffee, Simply Wholesome, or The Court Cafe, because supporting our community is always important to me.

The FAMU community out here is tight-knit and strong, so there is almost always something going on. Between family and that extended community, there is always space to connect, celebrate, and just be present. I also love supporting my friends, so we would make sure to attend an event DJ’d by my close friend DJ R-Tistic. Those nights are always a good time full of great music, good people, and a real sense of community.

We would definitely go to church on Sunday at Second Baptist Church in Santa Ana, followed by a cute brunch at Urth Cafe. And if my family is having one of our gatherings, which they usually are, I’m bringing my guest with me. Good food, music, laughter, and that feeling of being around people who genuinely enjoy one another.

We would also mix in some slower moments maybe a spa day at Desaur DTLA, a smoothie from Kreation Juicery & Kafe, a yoga class, a visit to Reparations Club, Lore, or The Salt Eaters Bookshop, because reading is one of my favorite ways to reset. And of course, a little shopping, because I love fashion and expressing my personal style. We would end the week with a sunset picnic or dinner in Laguna Beach, talking about life, purpose, and whatever season we are stepping into next.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I think about the people who shaped me, I always start with the family who poured into me with love, wisdom, and acceptance. I grew up in foster care, and the people who cared for me during that time taught me the true meaning of service and community. Even when we didn’t have much, we gave what we could. Those early experiences built the foundation for my understanding of compassion, responsibility, and what it means to truly show up for others.

My grandmother became one of the greatest influences in my life. She often told me that “women need something of their own” words that stayed with me and continue to guide my path. JT Legacy Solutions exists because she planted that seed of ownership. Her strength, resilience, and belief in possibility shaped the woman I am today.

I also owe much to the mentors and leaders who guided me throughout my military career. Their example taught me discipline, purpose, and the importance of lifting others as I climb. My time at Florida A&M University shaped me deeply as well. The peers in the Rattler Battalion, my sisters in National Society of Pershing Angels and the rest of my FAMUly stood by me, helping me balance motherhood, education, and service. Today, I’m honored to serve as the Board Secretary for the FAMU Army ROTC Alumni Association, where I pour into future Black military leaders just as others once poured into me.

Community has always been my compass. As a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, I carry the principles of service, scholarship, and sisterhood into every space I enter. My journey across the world has taught me to break barriers, embrace new cultures, and see people with deeper compassion.

And above all, my children. They are my inspiration and my legacy. I’ve taken them across the world to experience a life filled with culture, curiosity, and care. From an early age, they volunteered alongside me handing out meals, blankets, and toys to families in need. They remind me every day that when you have something to give, you lose nothing by sharing it. Everything I do is rooted in community, and I’m profoundly grateful for every person who helped shape that value in me.
