Meet Yujin Han | Pianist, Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yujin Han and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yujin, why did you pursue a creative career?
Since young age, I have been drawn to music, composition, and creative expression. I think it’s because I crave constant inspiration, I love discovering different interpretations of art and creating my own versions of them. I am naturally attracted to works with depth and complexity, such as metaphors, poetry, and cinema. Music is the perfect medium for this—it is a profound language that exists without an alphabet.
I also deeply appreciate music because of its collaborative nature. It allows me to share a space with musicians who bring entirely different perspectives, adding new layers to what has already been written. Jazz, creative music are all about sharing a moment that none of us could have planned. It feels like being on an unknown journey with beloved friends, which connects perfectly to my love for travel and my passion for exploring unfamiliar destinations.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a pianist and composer rooted in improvisational music, jazz, and contemporary styles. Above all, I love creating, exploring, and truly playing. Performing with my fellow musicians feels like awakening a whole new sense! It is a experience of “play”
I’m always fascinated by harmony, sounds which evokes a emotional journey with beautiful melody. What I love about this music is the creative essence. It always pulls me is that the spontaneous musical conversation.
I am now preparing to graduate from the master’s program at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI). This journey taught me far more than just how to play an instrument; it shaped the core values I want to live by, largely thanks to my inspiring cohort of twenty peers.
Moving to the U.S. four years ago brought major challenges—navigating a new language, absorbing endless information, and managing a packed schedule. However, my greatest obstacle was self-judgment. I used to let self-doubt and anger over my playing hold me back. Through meaningful mentorship at BGJI, I learned to shift my perspective and embrace a core philosophy of the program: “playing like a child.” Today, I approach music with a fire of curiosity and deep gratitude.
Humanity, joy, grief, love, storytelling, and the unknown—these are the elements I strive to portray. In a time when humanity can easily feel forgotten, I choose to live and play with these values at the forefront of my music.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Boston, there are too many! With trees, everywhere is my favorite spots. However, if I will to choose some, I love walking by North End, Harvard station, near Seaport, and Downtown. You can take commuter rail to go to further. Rockport is a beautiful small town, Providence has a historical you certainly would want to check!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family!
Thank you for your endless support, love, and daily prayers. I would not be the person I am today without you. Reflecting on the hardships of recent years, I appreciate more than ever how incredibly supportive you have been and how we have persevered together. Thank you for every phone call, every check-in, and trusting me. No matter where I go, you are my home!
