We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, how do you think about risk?
I mean, like so many of us, I’ve had a complicated relationship with risk in the past, but the more you work that muscle, the stronger it is and I think it’s really just about having a foundation of trust in the concept of the unknown and understanding it won’t swallow you whole, moving forward in spite of trepidation. Risk can be anything from knocking down the walls you’ve grown accustomed to in order to create more space (literally and figuratively), relocating from one coast to the other in a car filled with boxes of books, two black cats, and little else with no real plan and knowing no one at the destination point (true story!), or buying a newly discovered painting by an artist you’ve never heard of but whose work has grabbed you by the gut. Taking risks galvanizes change in your life, your perspectives, and is ultimately about the power and freedom of choice, leaning into it knowing that nothing is infallible, but there’s inherent beauty in that infallibility, too. I recently heard someone say that “being creative is about tolerating uncertainty” and that seems to encapsulate the core essence of risk.

What should our readers know about your business?
Rebecca Cox Studio designs and creates residential interiors that honor the joyful chaos of real life and its inhabitants – pets and kids and actual livability are cool in our world. Nothing is precious but everything feels good and beauty and balance, color and texture, art and originality are paramount in our projects, whether they’re completely new builds, remodels and renovations, or personalized décor and design throughout existing spaces.

Rebecca Cox Studio was created after an interior design firm I began as a partnership met its denouement in the summer of 2024. I’d launched that firm when I was forty years old and at that time was certain I’d be building and expanding it for decades, but things change, circumstances change, desires change. And while 12 years ago I would likely never have considered a solo interior design proprietorship an appealing and energizing prospect, now I can’t imagine anything different. Recognizing what my values are as a woman and human and business owner, how I choose to spend my days, having respect for my clients’ spaces and their family members and the intimacy of the interior design relationship throughout its process – that all has inherent significance. Utilizing local fabricators for custom furnishings and millwork and small, independent sources for textiles, rugs, accessories, and lighting, local tradespeople whose work I trust and with whom I share clear, unfettered communication – it all means so much to me to develop these relationships and to maintain and protect them over time. These are the people I rely upon to ultimately carry out the visions I’ve proposed to my clients and the energy, attitude, and ingenuity of the whole collective is imbued into the final result – what the clients ultimately live with every day of their lives.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
(Requisite trip to Venice Beach, as its proximity is undeniably alluring. And I never go on my own, so it’s a lark to visit and experience when others are in town!)
Driving all over town here, but here are some of my favorites, in no particular order . . .
1) Skylight Books in Los Feliz because independent bookstores and the humans keeping them running deserve all our love!
2) Kitchen Mouse in Highland Park for late breakfast/early lunch – their Gomasio brown rice cakes are unreal and everyone who works there is just top notch and kind.
3) Anything off the menu at Local in Santa Monica for dinner. (And they have incredible cocktails.)
4) The new LACMA is STUNNING and a solid three hours ought to be devoted to exploring its beauty and creativity.
5) The Huntington Library and Art Museum is like taking a field trip from the city and just walking its grounds will lower your blood pressure.
6) A strong midday latte at Companion in Venice.
7) And a visit to Platform in Culver City for an A Purposeful Rescue adoption event on a late Saturday morning to meet all the adoptable muttlets.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When you’re fortunate enough to have a friendship of over twenty years, you realize how long someone has known you and how many changes and evolutions you’ve seen one another through and it’s kind of wild and strange and wonderful. My best friend on the East coast, a business owner, mom, and total Virgo badass, gets a resounding shoutout. She’s the bee’s knees and then some. And to ALL the tribes of womenfolk who support one another and pull each other up with love, support, compassion, and kindness – your encouragement and thoughtfulness is a superpower.
