We had the good fortune of connecting with Kardale Holland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kardale, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
There are several things that I enjoy like reading random poetry, going to the movies , eating pizza ,eating waffles with peanut butter and enjoying the things I want as a career such as dance and acting. But what what I truly enjoy that makes me happy is roller skating. I am pursing a career in acting and I have a BA in dance from CSUlB, but all I want to do everyday is roller skate. I started skating before Covid, but ever since the shutdown and closing of rinks, I have been roller skating almost everyday outside . I never felt so excited to do something everyday when I wake up. I literally will skate, get home and take a shower and think about my next movements I’m going to do next time I skate while I’m in the shower. Roller skating has taken over my life so much it’s scary and exciting at the same time because I don’t want to do nothing else. I eat, sleep and breath roller skating. I realize roller skating keeps me happy while also being therapeutic for me. To add ,people and other skaters tell me I’m really good and I am an inspiration to them which feels good and addictive to hear. It keeps me going and that’s all I ever wanted to be; an amazing skater. When I was in foster care, we used to go out some nights to skate at a place that used to be called Skate Depot. I loved the music, and I was amazed on how good the skaters were, especially the guys. When it was time for the all guys session or backwards skate only on the floor, I would be on the side just looking and slightly jealous at the guys, but envying them at the same time. I would think to myself “man, I wish I was that good”. Fast forward years later, I’m doing what I saw the male skaters do. With practice and the dance training, I have became the skater I always wanted, but I am still trying to become better. Roller skating has literally kept me happy, improved my mental health and kept me socializing during this pandemic. I wouldn’t know how my mental health would be without roller skating. I hope everybody during these tough times can find something that brings them joy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As far as the performing arts , I am pursing acting and dancing. Even though I have a degree in dance, acting was always the ultimate goal, I got inspired by going to the movies and watching great actors speak. I can watch great movies and scenes over and over again. I believe I knew I wanted to be an actor when I was 18 years old. Their are other things that give me joy but acting has to be part of that for me to be complete as a person. I had to overcome my fear of speaking fast and stuttering for me to pursue acting which took some years. I still stutter but I am more confident about my speech. Some lessons I learn along the way was You have to work hard and keep going if you want something. To add, I have to believe it’s going to happen. Lastly , I learn I only have one life , then I’m Gone, so I have to go for anything I want and take care of myself . What sets me apart from Other people is that I’m totally fine being “the weird one” in a group and speaking for others around me even if I have to face the consequences. Even though we are still in a pandemic, I feel hopeful for my career and excited for the things to come .
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was coming to visit, we would go to Venice beach because of the culture their and I would convince him or her to bike ride or roller skate at the beach with me. We would certainly get breakfast every morning and hopefully I can introduce them to waffles with peanut butter . I would take them to the grove in Los Angeles because it’s a gorgeous place for people to see. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I just want to give a shout-out to all my teachers, friends and family who supported my journey along the way and gave me great advice. One teacher I give credit to for helping me become a better person is my dance teacher Karen McDonald. I also want to give a shout-out to my friend Rodney who supported me when I was struggling years ago.
