We had the good fortune of connecting with Flobo Boyce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Flobo, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Of course! I truly believe in this: “Make Your Hometown Proud.” It really sums up my approach to my life, art and business. You can work for your own growth, but do so in a way that exhibits leadership and compassion for others. I’m from Brooklyn, NY and that town has its own share of values, perspectives and ideals. When I come across any professional challenge, I like to envision the resilience of the people back home. It really helps to push me forward.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a standup comedian in 2020, we are all trying to find new ways to share our art with the world. Though my material is accessible, it does come from a unique perspective. I’m a first-generation American that group on big “shiny floor” entertainment shows, like the Tonight Show. As a minority, there is a bit of desire to represent my culture positively in my art as well. As far as my growth goes, the old adage is true: You have to go out of your comfort zone. However, to take that one step further, I’m a firm believer of routinely “breaking the formula.” If you are going out and killing it every night as an entertainer, I’d say it’s time to rework your act. My “overnight success” is currently in its twelfth year, and there’s still more to come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Overland Cafe – Palms Birdie’s – DTLA Angel City Derby Girls Roller Derby – Culver City Los Angeles Galaxy – Carson

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of the best books I’ve ever read (and listened to, I bought the audio book as well) was Marc Ecko’s “Unlabel.” While technically a memoir, it serves as part motivational book, part self-help, part cautionary tale of what happens when you focus on the wrong things, and comeback story. Success is constantly moving forward, but the path (and the speed on that very path) can vary.
