We had the good fortune of connecting with J Werkz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi J, what are you inspired by?
There’s two things that keep me pushing. The first thing is Family. My daughter and my Partner aren’t the reason I started in music, but they’re the reason I won’t quit. They make me want to really push to the top and create a better life for us. The second thing that keeps me going is wealth. NOT the traditional idea of wealth. Im talking about Long money. Generational wealth. I want to create a Kingdom for my family & have multiple properties, investments, etc that keeps my family fed and Happy for a long time to come. Not the kind of wealth that most rappers want, diamonds etc… That long Term comfort and Financial literacy.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My musical sense all started with Jeremy Wright, who ended up being my guitar teacher and friend in Elementary School. Then from there i moved on to Viola, trumpet, and Tuba. By the age of 13 I was advanced in 3 instruments. I was the All California Tuba player #1 in the state for both music Reading and Live performance. Basically my knowledge of Music reading, Keys & BPM, and creating sounds was already there before I ever started recording. The reason I feel like I am a different type of Artist is that I really dont have to Rap about the Trap, Twerkin females, or drugs to get my point across. Alot of my music is about the struggle that everyday people go through, and prophesizing what our Grind will result to. Which is that long money, ownership, and overall health and wealth for our families. The grind is never easy. Having 1 follower isnt easy. Having zero plays on soundcloud isnt easy. But once you realize that music is also directly tied to marketing and advertisements, it gets a whole lot easier… Now that I have a firm understanding of how to get my music out there. My pages and my brand have seen exponential growth. Now I average about 20k streams per song. 4k views on any youtube video etc … World: understand this.. YOU dont have to be from the HOOD to make rap music. There is a whole fanbase out there waiting for relatable music that hits their soul. Make what YOU want people to feel. Then market it to the people you feel will relate. Simple.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Easy: Day 1 1. Grand Central Market DTLA You can get any kind of food there & get a sense of LA 2. Santa monica Ride BRD around town & hit the breweries 3. Venice Beach Skatepark vibes & walk the storefront Day 2 4.Long Beach (Maybe ballast point) LBC cant be missed 5. Huntington Beach Possibly surf or take a swim 6. Balboa peninsula Dinner & a bonfire cant go wrong Day 3 5. San Diego 6. Tijuana 7. Rosarito Day 4 (repeat day 3 lol) Mexico is so close to us there is no Reason NOT to go. Cheap food cheap beer & a whole lotta fun.. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely… There is a team that I have put together that are always pushing for success. Members of my team include My Father, Tim Lamothe, Chris smith, Don Richie, & Jacob Kiss. My dad bought me FL studio PRO as a coming home gift when he got home from prison. He told me that whatever I make on this program just remember where you got it. He basically reminded me that I had skills and gave me the Tool that lead to everything I do musically. Tim is a lyrical inspiration to me as he has the deepest bars out of the whole squad. Chris smith (also former room mate) was my original audio engineer and taught me a ton of techniques to take my music to a new level. Don Richie Brings a Hip hop vibe to the squad at all times & he lets us know if the song is truly fire or trash. Jacob Kiss is the classical Hype man for my music & constantly the voice in my ear saying NOT to stop creating content. We basically all have the understanding that if one of us makes it we all make it. You eat I eat mentality.
