We had the good fortune of connecting with Hope Bartimioli Thal (H.B. Thal) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hope, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I personally like this question because it’s about how YOU define success. Success is just that, a personal definition. For me, success has always involved getting to work & collaborate with other creative people I’m inspired by. My hope has always been to pay my bills that way as a marker for personal success. The amount of money I earn is only relevant to the amount it costs me to live in Los Angeles. I think sometimes other people have markers of success for you but that is entirely unfair and just a quick way to kill your joy.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a composer and songwriter working in a lot of different areas ALWAYS. I work as an assistant to Alex Geringas on many projects doing additional music, notating music, working on previews and deliveries for studios. I am also a composer with Joy Music House, a score production company started by Catherine Joy. We most recently produced the score for Minari by Emile Mosseri. I’m most excited about some of these projects I’ve had the privilege of being a part of. I cannot wait for people to see Minari. I’m also looking forward to the release of Arlo the Alligator Boy coming to Netflix soon that I was also on the music team for. I have gotten where I am through a lot of dedication, luck, & grit. Being an artist is 98% rejection and 2% acceptance. I’m grateful to have been told yes, have people who believe in me, and persisted when they didn’t. I’ve learned to always lift others up, that a rising tide lifts all boats. I want people to know that being kind and respectful to others is as important as being talented. I hope that is my brand.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When people come to LA (pre-covid) there is usually a list of things I always try to include. Go to an improv show; Go to the beach, recently I’ve gone south to El Porto or north to Malibu. My decision on beaches is more about crowdedness and parking than anything else. Griffith Park Observatory-As much of a tourist destination as it is, I thoroughly enjoy it. An LAFC Soccer game. Then there is food… where to start. Johnny’s West Adams for amazing pastrami fries, Din Tai Fung for the taiwanese dumplings, Little Fluffy Head café- If you haven’t tried cheese tea you’re missing out. Just What I kneaded for vegan pastries, Wax Paper for the best sandwiches, El Carmen for Margaritas and happy hour, Casablanca in Venice for the experience. All of these places are unique experiences you can’t get in other cities.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Catherine Joy has been a mentor to me from my earliest days in LA. She has always believed in me and shined a light on my path. I have been honored to work with/for her and I love getting to work with her through Joy Music House.
