We had the good fortune of connecting with David Nitzsche and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I found myself always reaching out, making new connections, and looking for work that would not only challenge me, but was something that I really wanted to work on. Starting my own editorial company felt like the perfect vessel to take that journey to the next level. Editing is one piece of the puzzle, but the interaction and communication, the organization, and the hustle, are all aspects I love about this business. Once you have a kid, you tend to think about the future a bit more and so far, I like where it’s heading.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It’s tight competition between what needs the most attention, a two-year old or your own small business. I really think the answer is a small business. Building relationships, word of mouth, and networking are all the name of the game in this business. For me, taking a “break” from editing is actually a breath of fresh air. I’m always trying to build new relationships, always looking for new talent I can bring on to work with me (assistant editors, audio mixers, colorists), and looking for new ways to improve my own workflow and business. It’s nice to poke your head out of the edit bay once in awhile to see what’s out there.

Editorially, I’ve been fortunate to work with some really amazing clients on some great projects over the past year. I’ve developed a working relationship with the NFL and EA, getting the opportunity to work on some really amazing projects (even a playoff video for my hometown Cleveland Browns. Yes, Cleveland in the PLAYOFFS), I’ve continued relationships that I’ve built over my years freelancing, and had a lot of new opportunities come up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wait, we used to go out? In public? This would be a tough question to answer during normal circumstances let alone during a time when I haven’t really gone anywhere in a long time. My favorite part about Los Angeles is that you can drive about an hour in any direction and hit somewhere completely different and unique. Go to the beach, the desert, head over towards the mountains, or cruise up North a bit. Along the way, stop at every burger place we could find. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I may never win an Oscar, so I gotta use this moment to shoutout my mom. Also, my wife who has been encouraging and motiving through every single point and journey in my career. Editing may be done alone in a dark room most of the time, but it is very much a team sport. There is no way I would be where I am today without every single person and opportunity along the way, each seeming to come along at the perfect time for the perfect reason.
