We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Duckett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
My focus and consistent practice. Natural talent never wins out. The successes I’ve had in my career didn’t come from my natural gifts but from focused practice in my craft. I don’t care how talented you are, nothing can replace good old fashioned hard work.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Getting to this point in my career has come from grinding away over time, hard work and believing in myself. It’s never been easy but it’s always been something I love to do. Even in the times when I doubt myself, this love drives me to improve and grow. I’ve learned natural talent isn’t everything. It’s definitely part of the puzzle but if you’re relying just on that to succeed, you’re not going to get too far. However, if you mix your natural talent with hard work and dedication all while staying humble, you’re setting yourself up for the best success. It may not come instantly, but great things never do. All those small victories add up to big ones over time if you let it; keep moving, that’s the key. I’m not a gifted performer or artist. My biggest strength comes from my mental drive. I’m a self taught artist because this inherit drive keeps me striving to keep growing, trying new things and learn from my failures. It’s like Nelson Mandela simply said, “I never lose. I either win or learn.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If they’ve never been to LA before, I will always take them to Griffith at night. I don’t think there’s anything else which sums up LA more than that view. Since it’s their first time in LA, I’d grunt through the Walk of Stars but they have to experience the TCL Chinese Theatre, at least the outside of it. Touristy I know but it meant alot to me when I first came to LA. I’d then take them to my favorite cafe, Caffe Vita then see a film at the Vista Theatre. I like to rock climb so I’d take them to Cliffs of Id. Then drive along the PCH and hangout at Will Rogers State Beach so they can see their first California sunset. If there’s someone good playing, we’d go see a show at the Troubadour and/or Teragram Ballroom.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family, especially my Mom and Dad. They’ve helped me in the hardest times to keep pushing on as well as always being my number one fan because they believe in me one-hundred percent. I would not have had my successes without their love.
