We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Madrid and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlos, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was working for a a private personal training gym, and I was feed up with the owners. They where stuck in there old way’s, not open to any new ideas, equipment, or method’s. They had no educational background on rehabilitation. I was getting ready to graduate from Cal State Northridge in 2002, with 2 degree’s. One was in Kinesiology and the other was in Athletic Training. I always had the dream to open my own gym. However, at that time I had no idea or clue of how to even get started. I proceeded to tell my clients that I was getting ready to move on, when they said where ever you go we will go. And that is what started it all. I left with 10 of my best clients, rented gym space from a private gym and a year later, grew from 1 clients to 30 clients. It was and this point that my dream started becoming reality. I started working hard, saving my money, and my clientele grew to 65 clients. At this point not only did I have my clientele set, but I had saved enough money to take the risk and open up my own gym. I opened in march of 2003, and I am still in business to this day.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business was started in March 8,2002. I started renting space from a private gym, and had a 8×8 office, enough room for my stretch table, little refrigerator, and my file carry-on. I think the one thing that sets me apart from other trainer’s is most of my clients have been with me from 3-24 years and still going strong. One of the main reasons why I am where I am today is, I am very hard headed, hard working, and I never take no for a answer. It has not been easy, especially during the years of the financial debacle. I have been in business for my self for 18yrs, and there have been some hard times. However, from these hard times I have learned 1 thing. If you don’t struggle, you don’t appreciate what you have. If it was that easy everybody would do it. I would want the world to know the following: I wake-up everyday, as if I had nothing. This is what keeps me hungry and wanting more.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
The 1st place we would go is Houston’s restaurant in Pasadena. Then from there we would head to the Pineapple Hill saloon. And after that we would end the night at Dames-n-Games.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The shout out would go to my family 1st, especially my dad who has been there with me from the get go. My wife Jessica who then was my girl-friend, who believed in me and supported me all the way thru. None of my dreams and career would have been possible with out my core 10 clients. Thank you to Wayne, Michele, Gloria, Linda, Stephanie, Dave, Tracy, Raquel, Christina, and Maryann. I owe everything to all these people in my life that helped start my gym, and career.
