We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmela Segal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carmela, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Friends and family are a huge part in making me feel the best. They inspire me and motivate me to keep going and pursue my art. I’m also always so happy when I finally finish a painting I’ve been working months on or finish a YouTube video that took a while to edit. Side note-I get so happy when my plants grow new leaves, it’s also the little things in life. 🙂

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love painting surrealism, my favorite painters are Frida Kahlo and Dali so they inspire my work a lot. I am super proud of a series I am in the middle of working on. It is called “Human Body/Nature Series”, which consists of a bunch of surrealist paintings such as human lips painted as rose petals. It has not been easy because I still have a ton of paintings to work on and just finding the time and motivation as been sort of a challenge. I try to overcome this problem by thinking about how much I want to show this off to the world. As far as my art, I am still learning everyday but I think the biggest lesson I have to remind myself is that everyone has their own journey and own timeline so I try not to stress too much about where my art will take me in the future. I also believe you should create art that you want to create, not art that you think others will like but you secretly hate, that’s one of the reasons I dropped out of college! I would love the world to know that I don’t take myself too seriously, which is exactly how I want you to view my art. I think there is already a lot going on in the world so my goal with my art is to be able to take you somewhere else for just a moment.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I always love taking people to Santa Monica. I love just riding down the boardwalk and eating at the pier. I also love to dance so I always take people to Clifton’s in DTLA, that place has the best music and it’s different on all the floors. I just love that place!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to my parents, especially my dad. He has always been willing to help my with my art whenever I have asked. If I have a video idea that is a little wacky and I need graphics or animation for it, he has never said no to helping me out. My parents are extremely supportive of me pursuing my dreams, which I wouldn’t be able to do without their constant support.
