We had the good fortune of connecting with Juliet Mendoza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juliet, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was made in the city of angels (Los Angeles CA) I was born in 1981 when gangs still had a very strong presence on the street in many place that now have been gentrified. I grown up in a tough neighborhood in the middle of Hollywood. My parents both worked. And I was a street kids back then. We had to learn where was safe. Tell time with street lights. Stay together to stay safe and many more street life lesson that have come in very handy now in the real world with many types of people. I didn’t have it easy and I had to work hard for everything, just like today. It thought me not to give up and that I would meet some amazing people in my lifetime.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love the freedom of being an artist. It is so hard sometimes to just be able to be yourself and push your growth. I believe that being a dancer had set me a side from other Dj’s. I’m not saying that people don’t dance. But the house dance scene is not something many people know about especially the competitive level. It helps me with my music selection, with reading crowds and aiming for certain goals. This journey has not be easy at all. I have lost many people in my life. People you think have the best interest for you and they just become someone that either doesn’t see your vision or you just grow out of each others path. The best lesson I have learned is keep to yourself when you are going through stuff. It is no one’s business what you are doing. Just do and reach your goals. No one will do what you do for you but yourself. I am currently working on my project Jill’s House. We have some surprises coming soon once this covid thing is over. We are here to support the house Culture and are trying our best to keep this music alive.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
My favorite hangouts here in LA is Dtla. I love the grand central market and walking around downtown and hitting the different rooftops and definitely Will Rogers state beach. Sliver lake for some gelato.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Mos Def yes…. there are many people that have been there for me. My Dance Famliy around the world. My House family from around the world. My family and my not blood family. I won’t be able to name everyone so hopefully this is ok. I have learn so many lessons from the good and the bad in every relationship I have had.
