We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Shipp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started Meridian Design Construction, like many people starting a business – there was no work/life balance. Everything blended together and it was all work, all the time. I can recall spending nights at Lowe’s looking for material selections after a full day of working in the field. As Meridian has grown and we added more employees, more projects, more moving parts, Sara and I knew that we needed to “separate church + state” so we started creating boundaries with clients and ourselves to really develop the perfect balance between our work + personal life. We narrowed in our project radius, we have a cell phone dedicated to work communication that goes into “do not disturb” mode promptly @ 4:30pm + weekends and we deeply evaluate each project before even agreeing to a job walk. I recently came across a quote that said “I would rather be a family man with a business vs. business man with family” and it hit home. The last 8 months with our baby girl Billie has taught us how fast time flies and if you do not make the time to step away from work and enjoy life, it’ll be gone before you know it!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lessons we’ve learned along the way . . . there are too many to count! But with each speed bump we’ve hit in business, we always create a new system or process to never repeat heartbreak history and always remember to be fair + kind.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ojai Valley Inn. Period. I could spend a lifetime there, not just a week! Anything Ojai actually if “heaven” at the Inn gets stagnate. We LOVE starting the day with caffeine @ Beacon, snacks + sips @ tipple & ramble, a mid-day foot massage @ Relaxation Station, perusing the goods @ Decor and ending the evening with gluten free Ruben sandwiches @ Jimmy’s Pub.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Sara. I have learned the most about my business from Kyle Hunt, a remodeling business + marketing coach who I have been working with for 4+ years.
