We had the good fortune of connecting with Juwan Rohan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juwan, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance is a tricky situation. I honestly don’t know if there is a perfect answer for this or ever will be. Sometimes we get so trapped in “work” we can’t focus on other things; whether it’s family or hobbies. Two years ago, I would come home from work, work on music all evening and through the night. Now, I come home to my girlfriend and my son and have spend time with them before even attempting to work on music. Most nights I’m even too tired to work on music! There’s so much to do when I get home and my mind is always just racing that even when I get a moment to breathe and the kid is asleep and my girlfriend is watching tv, I’m too mentally drained to focus on writing music… I have complete writer’s block. So balance….how do I find that? Sometimes I just try and push myself over that hill to reach creativity. Sometimes it works, sometimes it backfires and I end up writing a song I hate… just because I feel pressured to “keep working.” Sometimes we have to just take a break when the time calls for it. I’ve been really trying to get into meditating and using that to bring me to a peaceful zen calm that way it’s easier to transition from daddy mode to artist mode.
What should our readers know about your business?
See, the crazy thing is that I’m not just a dad and musician, I also own a successful car rental company and that takes up a lot of time as well! Balanced Motives LLC is a car company I run through the app Turo and trying to manage time with that, my 9-5, my kid, my girlfriend, my music, and my clothing company….is extremely hard. However, I love it! I choose to do it, the good thing is I could stop at anytime, but I don’t want to. I try and find it in myself to continue to push and teach. My ultimate goal is to teach people that they can to do whatever they want, they can make money doing what they love, they can be entrepreneurs.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take my friend to some of the best taco trucks in the Bay Area, I’d take them to all historical places in the Bay Area and obviously show the the stunning views of the city like Twin peaks, Grizzly Peak, Mission Peak, and Lands End. I’d show them the nightlife and what lots of people like to do at a sports game! Too bad the Raiders will be in vegas because a tailgate would really give a true sense of the Bay Area
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out the Russ; It’s All in Your Head book. It’s simple short and kind of just helped me overcome some mental constraints I’ve put onto myself
