We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Tikker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelsey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor behind the success of Hive is consistency. Our core values are the foundation of every decision we make. We were founded as an Eco-Friendly Salon and Boutique, and remain that way to this day. That is the bottom line of everything we do. We are a full service salon. We cultivate and maintain meaningful relationships with our clientele, many of whom share the same values as we do. I believe people are drawn to Hive because we are an Eco-Friendly salon, but they stay because it’s a friendly and welcoming place. You can come hang out, have fun, and leave with great hair knowing you made a choice that puts the planet first.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a hairstylist first, business owner second. I have always been drawn to the more artistic side of things. Growing up, my sister and I spent a lot of time with my aunt and uncle. My aunt is a quilter with impeccable taste, and my uncle is amazing artist. I was very inspired by their style. I did well in school , but I didn’t feel it came naturally to me. I always wanted to be drawing or designing, something different than the college route. I started doing makeup for friends and found my avenue. My mom was a very hard working, single mother and I believe I got my work ethics from her. I knew going to beauty school I wanted my license to cover everything (not just makeup) so I took the full Cosmetology course and leaned into doing hair full time. I haven’t done makeup since. Hairstyling is many things. It is performing a very technical job, while being extremely personable. I am pretty hard on myself and my work. I don’t think I’m the best, or most inspiring hairstylist/business owner in the world, but I really care. I care about the work I put out. I care whether or not my clients are happy. I care that people get what they need here, and I care that people enjoy their time at Hive- including the artist that work inside.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I LOVE this! If my bestie was visiting the area, I know exactly where I’d go. First things first: COFFEE. Depending on time of day or type of coffee desired, I would take them to different places. Scout Coffee to hang in and shop the curated items, Nautical Bean for the drip, BlackHorse for my fav drink of the year, “The Log.” That’s just the tip of the iceberg on coffee in this town. Next we’d have to drive to the coast, Avila Beach dog beach or maybe out to Cayucos, just the cutest little beach town. I always tell travelers you have to eat at Novo for the patio on the creek’s ambiance. My fav food to eat out in SLO is Petra. EVERYTHING there is good. Zorro’s Cafe & Cantina in Shell Beach for a beachy, Mexican vibe. They even sell the bomb salsa they make and serve! (Drooling) For some light shopping you can cruise around downtown. There’s an amazing bathing suit store that’s been there for YEARS, SLO SWIM (Summer’s coming right up), and the freaking coolest/cutest/amazing store, Len Collective, for all your shopping/gifting ideas. Next door is Blackwater, also super fun and inspiring to shop in. Whenever I have people visiting, I try and get them an appointment with my favorite brow girl, The Brow Fox, it’s just so fun to have fresh brows. Massages/sauna/cryotherapy at SLOCO Massage + Wellness. There are so many more amazing things here in Slo, places, trails, sights, short drives. This is wine country so if that was your jam there would be a huge list of wineries to hit (I don’t drink tho, so you’d have to get that list from the experts). I’m a huge homebody, so there’d be a lot of Netflix and hangin’ at home going on.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to dedicate this shoutout to my fiancé/life partner/best friend, Kyle. I have been fortunate to have so many people, friends, family and mentors help guide me to where I am today. Kyle, though, is my number one, day-in-day-out, support system. He is a wealth of business insight and life skills. I always refer to him as my secret weapon in my back pocket! I try to always get his input before making and decisions. He is just the best!
