Meet Aaron Surman | Pastry chef, Bakery owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Surman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aaron, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was baking for 20 years for others- In fine dining restraunts- cafes- I thought it was time to see if all my training was absorbed well enough to build my own baking brand.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was expelled for high school in grade 10- and needed to make money for rent. I got a job as a pastry chef apprentice at the age of 15 in one of the best fine dining restraints in Brisbane Australia, and never looked back-Im now 35 and have dedicated more than half my life to perfecting small things about the sweets I make that most will never know the difference. I worked 16-19 hours a day for 14 years in fine dining before moving into baking roles.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If Jake comes to Vancouver- We will head to fergie’s cafe in Squamish for breakfast before heading down a forest service road(FSR) to fish and hike a bit, probably have a beer around a camp fire to show him the real BC i have come to call home. Lunch would be at the Copper coil- in the same town, then supper at Delara restaurant.

Shout out to my family, wife and all the support and letting me give my vision a try, previous business owners for the mentor ship and allowing me to grow and my hiking group for listing to all my rants about what i hope to do.
