We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Farley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My idea to start my yoga business started during quarantine in 2020. Basically everything I had planned to do with this next chapter of my life had fallen through due to COVID-19, so I had to look into other options. I made a few lists of creative hobbies I enjoy and wrote down the pros and cons of each one. Most of the options on the list were on the artistic side like offering graphic design services, continuing photography, starting a small shop with handmade goods, like ceramics or jewelry. None of these sounded very sustainable for me. I knew that any of these paths wouldn’t have satisfied me for long before I wanted to try something else.
I kept going back to my daily habits – the things I continue to do for my personal happiness and wellbeing that I will never get tired of – and this is when I realized I wanted to teach yoga. I have made daily stretching a major priority in my life for almost a decade (thanks to my years dancing through high school) because I genuinely notice a difference in how I perform throughout the day and how I sleep at night when I am consistent with stretching each day. It’s kind of crazy to me that I never once thought about turning one of my daily habits into a business, but it honestly makes perfect sense to me now. These are the things I will continue showing up for in my daily life for myself, so why shouldn’t I share that with the world, turn it into a business, and hopefully bring joy to the lives of others?
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Yoga By Abby is my yoga platform. I release a few different classes per week from restorative to vinyasa yoga and even sometimes a little bit of yogilates. I like to emphasize the importance of daily habits, especially with this being how my business came to life, and how you can build healthy habits that add up to a healthy and happy life. I like to call it the ‘Mindful Movement Method’ because it truly all starts with your mindset in all things.
While most of my classes are not free, I’m always trying to find new ways to bring value to my community that don’t require any form of payment. I think this is important when it comes to building a community authentically. Right now, I am doing this through my newsletter where I often share free printable guides related to health, wellness, and yoga. I also like to incorporate this into my Instagram through little infographics on the benefits of yoga, and simply sharing really great eco-friendly businesses that offer products that can further enhance your practice and lifestyle.
I started Yoga By Abby a few months ago, and have so much more to do to get where I want to be! I am enjoying every step of the journey and reminding myself that a successful business doesn’t magically grow in one night. I will say that getting to this point wasn’t always rainbows and sunshine. There were a lot of long days filled with hours of studying during training and a lot of pushing myself a little too far to achieve more than I could handle in a short amount of time. But at the same time, becoming a yoga teacher taught me so much about myself and it continues to teach me everyday. I think the best lesson I learned along the way was the importance of taking breaks, getting some sunshine, and staying consistent with my personal daily routines that keep me sane. That is really what it all goes back to when I think of why I started in the first place, so I really prioritize those routines.
My teaching method is one that I hope can bring light and joy to all people, no matter our differences. I never want to force anyone to take a class with me or feel like they aren’t doing enough for their body or that they should look a certain way. That is the complete opposite of what I teach. I want to help others discover the beauty and success they already have within them by learning to love the body and the skills they’ve been blessed with and building those simple habits of mindfulness. Your morning routine really does have a domino effect on the entirety of your day, and that effects into your week, your month, your year, and your entire life. I fully believe that your joy and success begins with your morning routine, and I want those who join my community to feel like they found a method that makes that even easier for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ooh I love this question! Always a go-to for me and my family when we have guests is spending a day at the beach. Our favorite beach is Laguna. I love taking visitors to Urth Caffe or Gina’s Pizza in downtown Laguna and either dining in or taking it on the beach for a picnic. When it’s a slower day at home with a friend in town, I always enjoy showing them the local trails for hiking and walking, especially in the spring! For a more casual day at home with a friend, movie and game nights are always where it’s at, especially if it includes donuts from our favorite local shop.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could list so many wonderful people who have pushed me and supported me along the way in starting my business! Some of the most influential people and resources that helped me in this process were the team of incredible teachers at YogaRenew Teacher Training, where I became certified to teach yoga, Ashley Hagen of Ashes Yoga, who gives valuable information and advice in her Facebook group on starting a yoga business, and of course, my family!
