We had the good fortune of connecting with Abelina Sabrina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abelina, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I usually end up taking risks when I’m feeling energetic and impulsive but have been stagnant for a while. That’s how I ended up in Portland, Oregon a few years ago! I felt like Jim Carrey in Yes Man and was honestly feeling great. Don’t get me wrong, not all risks were worth it either but there is one big one that definitely changed my life for the better. That risk lead me to my current relationship. I hopped on a plane and risked meeting this funny guy who made sketches- something I used to do back in school but got too tied up in “big girl jobs” to ever actually pursue. He encouraged me to dive back into it. I’ve taken the risk and now making content for myself is the only thing I work on these days.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice by working at Disneyland for 4 years instead of going to college right out of high school. I certainly tried going to college at least part-time but when The Big Cheese demands your time, you give it to him. At least that’s how it felt at the time. Working at Disney kept my performing and my people skills sharp but maaaaan did I waste my brain building years!

I also have been doing voice over work for video games and walla since I graduated high school as well, it’s always so exciting whenever I get to utilize those skills! I just recorded a very fun job that is set to release this summer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much cool stuff to do in LA. Get some spicy tortas ahogadas from Chago’s in Montebello or honestly even a glass bottle of the best chocolate milk in the WORLD from Broguiere’s Dairy while you’re there, see a random comedy show at the Largo, go do some hammered karaoke in Little Tokyo, head over to Korea Town for all you can eat KBBQ. Santa Monica is a bit crowded but if anyone is feeling up for a train ride you can get to the Orange County beaches pretty quickly, especially Laguna Beach! Or if they prefer different terrain, Turnbull Canyon in Whittier is fun to hike and talk about all the spooky shit that’s gone down there.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom.

She doesn’t always understand what I do, but she always gives me the freedom and space to do it.

The team behind YouTube NextUp has made a huge difference in my creative career. NextUp was this amazing boot camp that would be hosted at YouTube spaces across the world where smaller creators would take production classes. I learned so much technical stuff bu being selected for the program and then hearing from the mentors that I was on the right track– it instilled a confidence in me I didn’t have before. Thank you!
