We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Sartain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I think of risk taking, I think of a Poker game. You can’t win unless you take a risk, so take the best risks you can. I left a career with the State of California, a house, and seats on 3 different non-profit boards 5 years ago to come to LA so I could start a full-time career as an Actor and Voice Actor. I cashed in my retirement a year and a half later so I could stay. I have made risk after risk. Sometimes the little risks have paid off, sometimes they haven’t. But I have yet to see if the biggest risk has paid off. So far, things are looking pretty good. Within 2 Months of moving to LA, I had an agent. The 2nd audition they sent me on, I booked a national commercial. A few years later, I booked an under 5 on Adam Ruins Everything and became SAG Eligible. I’ve done a variety of jobs from live action to short films to background work, all because I’ve kept an open mind and did my best to not say no. Of course, there have been lulls, but this whole time. even during the pandemic, I’ve found acting work. So I would say taking risks has played a major role in my career and life. But every risk was a calculated one that I’ve prepared for as best I could. Before I set foot in LA, I made sure I had headshots, a resume, a reel, and a website. When I get an audition, I read all the instructions and do my best to memorize the copy. When I invested in a potential TV show, I looked at the premise, at the financials and at the potential payoff. Of all the risks I’ve taken, I have no regrets. As the saying goes, you regret the risks you DIDN’T take..

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a performing artist and always have been. From a very young age, I loved doing voices and entertaining people. Whether its Acting, Voice Acting, or playing the Tuba, I love to perform for others and see the joy my performances cause. There was a time when I set performing aside as a “hobby”, but it never quite worked out that way. It kept bleeding into my professional work. Then I realized that my destiny was in the performing arts. In everything I’ve done, whether I’ve acted or performed other’s works or created my own, it was always with the intent of entertainment. If I can get a laugh from the most stoic person, I’ve done my job well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off, we’ll have to go to the best pizza in Hollywood, Raffallo’s Pizza. We can walk the walk of fame and use an app to find the stars of their favorite celebrities. We’d also have to go to the Griffith Park Observatory and hike up Mount Hollywood to get some incredible views of the city. We’ll probably want tacos at some point and for that, we’d need to hit up Trejo’s Tacos or Trejo’s Cantina to get some of the best Horchata (and Tacos) in the city. My friend may want to go to Universal Studios and take the Studio Tour, but I’ll point them in the direction of a better (and cheaper!) studio tour. Warner Brothers tours are a bit more intimate and you not only get to see the back lot, but walk through a real studio set as well as walk through their extensive prop collection and get photos with sets and props from some of my favorite movies and tv shows. We’ll definitely want a beach day, and for that, Santa Monica is a great choice. Not only are the great choices for food at the Promenade, but the Pier has tons of fun as well. And of course, no trip to LA would be complete with out some museum hopping. There are so many to choose from, including LACMA, the Holocaust Museum, the Museum of Tolerance, and many more. And if we’re going to the Holocaust Museum, right nearby is the Farmer’s Market which has a huge variety of shops and places to grab lunch.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank Marc Zicree and his organization The Table as many of my jobs and successes have come directly or indirectly through this incredible organization of my peers in the Industry. When you have a network of people to fall back on for advice and help, as well as several opportunities to serve others, it’s very easy to get through the toughest of times.
