Meet Alan Johnson | Stencil Artist & Painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alan Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Became a Father and saw my art as a way to take care of my family, It was a ruff start began with doing a few silk screen t-shirts then started dabbling in stencils and spray paint and one day I saw Heath Ledgers picture as the joker and spent the next two days drawing and cutting his stencils and when i completed the painting it was the Joker and about two weeks later Heath passed away. From that moment the spray paintings took on a life of their own thanks to the joker and they evolved constantly after that every canvas harder to create then the last. In the sixteen years of spray painting I’ve mastered many art styles and converted them into my style of stenciling and because of this ability i’ve had the opportunity to make art for the creator of Wolverine Lein Wein also getting a one on one interview with Stan Lee and many other opportunities like those, it makes you wanna keep going and pursuing this unique style you’ve evolved over the years and my persistence as an artist has lead to working with my Idles, great friendships and relationships that i am great full for experiencing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When i started stenciling it was to airbrush models for events like EDC and other similar shows had two t-shirts up for sale and after awhile i started to create stencils to paint on canvas and this evolved very fast for the style and how it has progressed over the years. First few years i primarily sold out of nightclubs like the Airliner and Cinespace in Hollywood every sunday and over time i started getting into the comicons, I grew up reading Spawn comics and watching Dragonball Z endlessly those two things fueled my art interest and still does till this day. Always felt like the art was the easy part of everything it was taking it out in public and speaking with people about what i do had me nervous first couple of years but thanks to the art i cant help but talk about what i paint and why i was inspired to attempt it, an interesting thing i learned about the canvases i have painted is that its best to name them gives them more sentimental value. I had one canvas i named ” Royal with Cheese” and for fans of the quoted film they would start laughing and buy the canvas instantly after hearing that and do to that now all my art carries a name and story of why it was created and for people who love the nostalgic characters and moments in time its fun to take a piece of that and share it with someone else.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
big fan of the Ocean so anything around the beach, paddle boarding and kayaking is kind of been my thing here theres endless places to go and have a experience and end the day with a good bonfire with some friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
my best friend Sparkle always gave me motivation and courage to really go for it and never give up, i cant thank her enough for that. I’d also like to give big thank you to the SOCAL ETSY GUILD and the amazing woman who runs it Stephanie she provides a unique outlet for artist like myself to get out there and turn this into a career, ive seen first hand many people turn their small business into their full time job, i would not exist as an artist today with out her and the events she has created.
