We had the good fortune of connecting with Alessandro Varotto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alessandro, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think that the most important factors behind the success of DRAV Skincare are the quality of the ingredients we use to manufacture our products and the transparency of our practices. We work directly with small farmers from all over the world. Farmers who share our same values, and more specifically they share a passion for quality and sustainability. I think that savvy consumers are increasingly looking for real transparency from brands, and I believe that they appreciate our authenticity.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I live by the Latin proverb ‘mens sana in corpore sano’, a healthy mind in a healthy body, and I would like the world to know that the brand DR.AV Skincare was born out of my passion for botanical ingredients. I created these products using the healthiest and most natural, yet most effective, plant extracts. We are so proud to be able to claim that we do not use any artificial chemicals whatsoever, which are widespread in health and beauty products.

I grew up in Italy, where we are obsessed with food, and this line was inspired by the Mediterranean diet. I often find that people are well informed about foods and they can easily distinguish a healthy food from a less healthy one. Unfortunately, the simplicity of that distinction is lost in health and beauty products. We don’t pay nearly as much attention to the ingredients we put on our skin. I would like to educate consumers about the importance of choosing natural ingredients, which, not only are they safer for our body but also for the environment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have lived in Santa Monica for many years and one of my favorite things to do is simply strolling down Montana Avenue all the way to the beach. This is a part of town that it’s absolutely not crowded with tourists, and there are a lot of charming boutiques and restaurants. I grew up in Italy and I can be somewhat particular when it comes to espressos. I found that the guys at Caffe Luxxe, on Montana and 10th, know how to make it right. If you keep walking west, you are going to hit the beautiful Palisades park and can enjoy a stunning view of the ocean from the cliff. You can have picnics there. I even threw my birthday party a few years ago. Then, you can actually walk the stairs all the way down to the beach. Another thing I like to do is driving up the coast to Malibu. There are some great spots up there to enjoy the view, eat and drink, like the Moonshadows, which is built directly on the ocean. Other neighborhoods I love are in West Hollywood and in the Melrose district. I like to just walk around and look at the stores. I miss bookstores! There is a fun one in downtown LA called The Last Bookstore. I can’t describe it, you just gotta go see it! Finally, I am huge astronomy fan, so I love going to the Griffith park and to the Griffith Observatory. I saw all the shows multiple times, and I even have class with my students up there sometime.
