We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Piraino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
There’s a common misconception that esthetics is a superficial field. But for those in the know, it’s deeper than that. It is about the science of skin health and overall well-being. The prevention and correction of skin abnormalities. Many people might be surprised by the amount of ongoing education and training required to become a skilled esthetician. We don’t just apply products and give facials; we understand the intricate biology and histology of the skin to provide the most effective and personalized care for our clients.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From the moment I earned my license, I dove headfirst into the world of esthetics. I have been in the boutique spa environment since the first day. It’s provided a nurturing space to refine my skills and explore a wide range of treatments, educational opportunities, and modalities. This path wasn’t without its hurdles. Building a loyal clientele takes dedication and perseverance. The field constantly evolves, demanding continuous learning of new facial trends, techniques, and the underlying scientific principles.

While flexibility is a perk of this career, it requires self-discipline to maintain a productive schedule. Thankfully, a passion for esthetics naturally supports this discipline, making it a fulfilling journey.

My proudest accomplishment is persisting through uncertainty. The pandemic forced a long halt to in-person services, presenting the biggest obstacle. This event, however, offered a new opportunity: Esthetic Instruction. This experience broadened my skillset and ultimately led to my current role as a brand educator.

The message I hope others take from my story is the importance of perseverance. Embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth, continuous learning, and innovative solutions. Each step in my career has been a stepping stone. Even after eight years, I feel like I’m just beginning.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was here visiting Los Angeles we would start our morning off with brunch at Cafe Jane in Highland Park. Next, maybe a hike at Wildwood Canyon Park Burbank. Lathered in SPF of course! I would then treat her to a relaxing massage and facial at Larchmont Sanctuary Spa. It’s a peaceful hidden gem in Larchmont Village. For dinner we would head to Ventura Blvd. “The Blvd.” to one of the many amazing Sushi spots.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This journey in esthetics wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible people who have supported me along the way.

First and foremost I’m thankful for my family. They have been a constant source of encouragement and unwavering belief in me. My amazing mentors who have guided me, and shared their knowledge and experience. My students that inspire me to keep growing and continue my own education and enthusiasm.
Of course my clients who have given me their trust and loyalty, and allow me to fulfill my career!

Each individual has been invaluable in shaping me personally and professionally.
