We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Justin Gonzales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander Justin, what makes you happy? Why?
HAPPY- Happiness 🙂 What makes me happy? Hmmm… so many things how to choose just one? Narrowing it down I would have to say Film and People. Of corse to not narrow it down it’s friends, painting, people, stories, CAMP, Queerness, Gayness, Extraness, Quirks, and Exaggerations.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My ART- Film Making on a dime CAMP for all ages. I know that limited resources come with high anxiety and a lingering dread. I take that dread and make it FUN! Just because you’re losing a location or have 12 pages to film in a day doesn’t mean you cant achieve beautiful work. My style in film making is over the top yet refined. I strive to create compelling visuals and story through specific camera work and sound design. I’m obsessed with heightened expressions- never breaking the fourth wall but always making a BOLD choice. How someone delivers dialogue is pivotal to storytelling. I believe delivery should be studied the way we study technical trades- it can make or break a project. I always have to remind myself HAVE FUN- this is supposed to be FABULOUS!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My ITINERARY: I get my daily cup of coffee always froth that oat milk and delight myself in the same routine. WHAT TO DO? Lets get physical! I live right near Runyon so I would walk to the top for the incredible view and jog down. Now I’M HUNGRY. I end up eating at Blu Jam cafe and I get the Eggs Shakshuka. I enjoy every bite. I make my way to Melrose – I thrift window shop and maybe grab some second hand items. The rest of the day is ahead. I wanna lay out on the beach or just sit on a knoll of fresh cut grass. So I make it to Barnsdall and spread out with my blanket watercoloring and napping. Hopefully I run into someone there- we chat it up and engage in a stimulating convo about our differences in how were managing during these crazy times and how YOGA and Meditation pulled us through. Finally the sunsets- Let’s get go out! I start at a dive bar near me thats walking distance- Boardners. Of corse I hit the happy hour HARD. Now I’m feeling toasty and cute so I uber to the Echoplex for a friends band. We manage our way back to my place- CRASH and here we are 2AM wide awake. We drunk munchies RAID the fridge and pray there’s a frozen pizza- there is- BINGE EAT until we pass out. And that’s how I entertain my friend from out of town.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I shout out Christine McAuliffe. A filmmaker and artist! Christine is a true creative with a strong voice in her writing and queer story telling. As a writer and film maker I am always in aw with how she creates. Her work is so intrinsic and fantastical . She thinks outside the box in all the right ways. She is a master at editing and sound mixing as well. If you can check out her latest film Maricruz! <3
