We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Lester and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The single most important decision that I have made that has contributed to my success is, my sobriety, definitely my sobriety. Without it I wouldn’t have had the many opportunities I have had in my life. I’m from Marietta, GA and in my opinion if you struggle with any type of addiction there are 3 ways out. 1. The most unfortunate of them all, Death. 2. Jail/prison or a lifetime trying to get and stay clean and 3. Move away and change all aspects of your life. Did the passion for Barbering and happiness happen overnight? No, through faith in a power greater than myself, meditation, hard work, my wife and my support system I’m achieving even more than I have ever imagined for myself. My name is Britt, my sober date is May 1, 2017, thanks for letting me share.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a licensed Barber and Cosmetologist. I fell in love with the craft of barbering before I ever picked up a clipper. I had a vision without any true plan, all I knew was that cutting hair would get me to where I’m destined to be. I’m proud to be a black and queer barber serving the LGBTQ. With only being licensed for 3 years I am currently working on tv/film sets, music videos, and photo shoots. Being persistent, having confidence behind my craft and faith that I have the ability to accomplish all things that are brought to me has helped shape me thus far. The joy for me within the Barber industry is that you can shape it any way you want. There is no right route to be successful behind the chair. You’re able to to build your own legacy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The great thing about California is that no matter where or what you do it’s always an adventure. Drag shows are always a good go to with me and the friends. Good food from random spots that just make you wanna dance. With sunsets and mountain top look out points with a hot chocolate.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to my mom Vicki. Thank you for loving me without question. Shoutout to my wife for being so amazing and rocking with me on this journey. To my brothers I love y’all and you guys inspire me daily! To the ones who have been there and support me Thank You. Shoutout to CeCe Marie for recommending me for this opportunity.
