We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexander, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Essentially I wanted to be in control of my own work/life balance. I’ve worked nine to fives, and while I enjoyed the structure, being self employed simply has more perks. I get to be far more creative working for myself, while also spending more time with my family. Starting your own business is a grind, but it’s worth it!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a fine art wedding photographer that specializes in genuine, natural, and emotive images. From my direction on a shoot or wedding day, to my colour correction when editing, I’m always trying to make things feel as natural as possible and seen from an artistic perspective. If someone tells me that a shoot they thought was going to be awkward was actually easy, I’m happy!

I’ve been shooting weddings for 10+ years now. I started in Alberta, Canada (where I’m from), but now I shoot largely in the Los Angeles and New York areas. I absolutely love what I do. I love to be part of such a monumental day in someone’s life, and help them remember it. It’s truly an honour to do what I do, and I’m proud to represent the couples that hire me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles has so many spots, I’m guaranteed to leave something out here. I think a balance between hitting the right tourist spots (like Griffith Observatory at sunset), and avoiding the over hyped ones (like Hollywood Blvd) is key. I think the must hit spots during a week in LA would be Melrose, Venice, Malibu, and Santa Monica. Lots of great walking and beautiful sights.

For coffee, I’d say hit Alfred’s in Melrose, Commissary in Burbank, and Laveta in Echo Park. Great coffee and great vibes all.

For food, I’m going to shout out Commissary again, I love that place. Tatsu Ramen on Melrose and La Brea, Republique, and as a non California native, I’m a sucker for In-N-Out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest support has always been my wife. She assists me when I need it, critiques me fairly, and is my biggest fan. She’s also an artist and a photographer, so it helps that we can speak the same language. Thanks babe, for all the help!
