We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Avery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
When I initially started my business I thought of success as a specific dollar amount. As time has gone on I’ve have come to define success as the amount of flexibility and freedom that I have without negative financial impact. How much time I have to do the things I want to do, how little time I am required to spend on domestic duties, the ease of taking spontaneous trips… I now use those parameters to define my success.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Hour X Hour Bath Co is a bath and body brand that brings awareness to invisible illness. It came out of my own decade long battle fighting to receive answers regarding my illnesses. I am most proud that my business exists. Having multiple illnesses and conditions that greatly affect my mental health and energy levels, it would have been easy (and justifiable) for Hour X Hour Bath Co to never come to fruition. My biggest and most consistent challenge has been work, life, illness balance. Knowing when to push through, knowing when to stop, allowing myself rest that isn’t laden in guilt. While it definitely is not easy, hearing about the impact my brand has had on the lives of others has made it worth it. When people come across my brand and it resonates deeply with them, I want them to understand that that feeling was planned and intentional. My goal was to make a population of people who are normally invisible to society, feel seen and validated. From product names, to labels, everything in my brand was purposely designed for that reason.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In the past I had rarely gotten out much so this would be a week of discovery for the both of us! I would definitely take them to eat at Monty’s plant based burger place. Fill our nights with drive in movies and swap meets. I’m in SoCal so the beaches and museums are a must, along with farmer markets. We’d it figure out and explore together! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My business bestie Jacque and my ex partner Trevon definitely deserve shoutouts and recognition. They both, without hesitation, pour encouragement, belief and financial support into myself and my business, even when I don’t possess it for myself. I don’t like to imagine where I’d be without them. .
